‘What Carter Lost’ Review: Texas High School Football Doc is the Story That ‘Friday Night Lights’ Was Missing
One of the greatest gifts any documentary can get is direct contribution from everyone involved in the story on display. “What Carter Lost,” the latest film in the Espn “30 for 30” docuseries, gives a thorough look at a tumultuous few months in late 1989, as one Dallas high school ascended to the heights of Texas football – before some players lost nearly everything.

For casual or non-football fans, director Adam Hootnick sets up the on-field supremacy of the Carter High School squad. Lauded here by at least one NFL hall-of-famer as the greatest high school football team in history, this group of Carter students came to wider cultural attention when their 1989 playoff run collided head-on with Odessa Permian, the team profiled in “Friday Night Lights,” Buzz Bissinger’s book that begat the film and later TV series.

The Best TV Shows Adapted From Books — IndieWire Critics Survey
Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)

This week’s question: What is the best TV adaptation of a book/book series?

Daniel Fienberg (@TheFienPrint), The Hollywood Reporter

Ok, I listed like 50 answers for last week’s Guest Stars question and I’m determined not to cheat this week! Kinda. The answer is “Friday Night Lights,” but I acknowledge that there are caveats, because the NBC TV series was based on the feature film, which was based on Buzz Bissinger’s book, so is the show based on a book or based on a movie? Well, because Peter Berg adapted both, I’m gonna say they’re both based on the book, because really the only continuity

Caitlyn Jenner Is Writing a Memoir With Friday Night Lights’ Buzz Bissinger
Caitlyn Jenner's well-choreographed transformation into the most famous trans woman in America hits another milestone: the memoir. The New York Times reports that Jenner is writing a memoir with Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Buzz Bissinger, author of the beloved nonfiction book Friday Night Lights. Bissinger also wrote the Vanity Fair cover story where Jenner publicly came out as a trans woman, and came to bond with her through his own non-normative gender practices. “I’ve also been open about cross-dressing and certain aspects of gender fluidity, and that created a bond,” said Bissinger. While the publisher, Grand Central Publishing, won't disclose the figures, industry executives are speculating the number is a "high seven-figure or low eight-figure sum."
