Michael Mann Retrospective - The Last of the Mohicans (1992)

10 May 2011 11:54 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

The Last of the Mohicans, 1992.

Directed by Michael Mann.

Starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Madeleine Stowe, Wes Studi, Russell Means, Eric Schweig, Steven Waddington, Pete Postlethwaite, Colm Meaney and Jodhi May.

Synopsis:

In 1757, North America is the battleground of the colonial powers of Britain and France. Midst the escalating conflict, three trappers from a nearly extinct Native Indian tribe protect the daughters of a British Colonel.

For his fourth theatrical effort, acclaimed director Michael Mann collaborated with Daniel Day-Lewis, an actor more infamous than himself for extensive research methods. Released in 1992, The Last of the Mohicans was a period action-adventure tonic that delighted film critics and movie audiences alike. To prepare for his leading role of Hawkeye, Day-Lewis lived in the wilderness; he hunted and fished for several months before shooting commenced on the eighth feature film adaptation of James Fenimore Cooper’s novel. Interestingly, Michael Mann never read the book; instead »

Brett Ratner In Talks To Direct MGM’s ‘Hercules’

28 April 2011 10:23 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Brett Ratner has stepped away from the director’s chair over the past few years to focus on producing, but signs point to him going back to his main…profession. Let’s be nice and call it that.

Later this year, we’ll be seeing Tower Heist from him, and now Vulture reports that the director has begun discussions with MGM about directing their Hercules project, titled Hercules: The Thracian Wars.

Based off of the comic series of the same name by Steve Moore, it’s been written by Ryan Condal, the screenwriter for Alex Proyas‘ film version of Paradise Lost. The comic presents a re-telling of the classic hero’s story, taking things in what seems to be a slightly darker direction. Oddly enough, Ratner was rumored to direct an Avi Lerner–produced film based on the character, titled Hercules. Whether or not there’s any connection between that »

Sony & MGM Unite to Release Bond 23 & 24

15 April 2011 9:00 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

This news has been floating around for the past 24 hours and I wasn’t going to post it but then decided that hearing the news that Bond 23 is drawing ever closer can only be a good thing. This is the news that Sony Pictures Entertainment has effectively joined forced with MGM to co-finance and distribute the movie across the globe. This can only be a good thing for Bond lovers (which includes us) bringing us one step closer to seeing Bond 23 on the big screen.

They also talk about Bond 24 also being financed in the same way over the next five years. All good considering MGM were in more than $3bn in debt less than a year ago! Not a bad turnaround eh?!

I’ll let the Press release which we’ve been sent do the talking:

Sony Pictures Will Distribute & Co-Finance ‘Bond 23′ & ‘Bond 24′

13 April 2011 4:42 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

MGM is rising from the financial ashes and “re-entering the filmmaking business”  and with it comes good news for Bond fans. Sony Pictures have announced today that they will help MGM co-finance the next Bond film, as well as a number of motion pictures in the next five years. They will also have Bond 24 to follow.

It is odd, in the press release below, is no mention of the expected Bond 23 director Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Revolutionary Road). I hope it is an oversight, as I’m excited to see what he and (possibly) cinematographer Roger Deakins can bring to the project.

Daniel Craig and Judi Dench return in their roles, while Javier Bardem and Ralph Fiennes are both rumored to join. Shooting begins this fall for a November 9th, 2012 release. Check out the press release below.
