Film Review: ‘Te Ata’

Film Review: ‘Te Ata’
The life and career of Te Ata, the Native American trailblazer who celebrated her people’s culture through performance and, in doing so, helped educate the country about Native traditions, is undeniably uplifting. But the well-intentioned biopic is ungainly, overtly articulating everything it doesn’t need to yet failing to explain much of what starts out as unclear about the tale. Lacking both fluidity and complexity, “Te Ata” is a functional but one-note tribute told through educational storytelling that, unlike its subject, doesn’t manage to inspire.

Director Nathan Frankowski and writer Esther Luttrell sabotage their work’s momentum from the start. In a 1906 opener, a young Mary Frances Thompson (Boriana Williams) narrates origin myths about her Chickasaw nation — located on land that would eventually become Oklahoma — while her father T.B. (Gil Birmingham) and her uncle, Chickasaw governor Douglas Johnson (Graham Greene), discuss their tribe’s rapidly changing political future. It’s a clunkily assembled introduction,

Trailer Watch: A Native American Woman Takes to the Stage to Tell Her Story in “Te Ata”

Te Ata”: The Chickasaw Nation

“What do you have to say?” a professor challenges college student Mary Thompson Fisher aka Te Ata (Q’orianka Kilcher, “The New World”). “What stories do you have to tell? What could you show me that I haven’t seen before?” These questions prompt Te Ata, a member of the Chickasaw Nation, to write and star in a play about the Chickasaw culture and people. And that’s just the beginning.

As a new trailer for Nathan Frankowski’s “Te Ata” hints, the titular character’s college play is the first of many successful turns onstage. She stars on Broadway, tours across the U.S. and even performs for President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. However, Te Ata and her family still encounter violence and prejudice, even as her success as an actress and performer grows.

The young woman even faces resistance from her own father (Gil Birmingham, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”), who can’t understand why Te Ata is so adamant about leaving home. “I have to go so that I can tell our stories,” she explains.

Te Ata’s journey to find her true calling led her through isolation, discovery, love, and a stage career that culminated in performances for a United States president, European royalty, and audiences across the world,” the film’s official synopsis summarizes. “Yet of all the stories she shared, none are more inspiring than her own.”

Written by Esther Luttrell (“Lithium Springs”), “Te Ata” co-stars Cindy Pickett (“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”), Brigid Brannagh (“Army Wives”), and Mackenzie Astin (“Scandal”).

Te Ata” will open in Oklahoma theaters on September 29 and hit NY and La October 13 with additional cities to follow. Check out the film’s new trailer and poster below.

Review: "Wind River" (2017) Starring Jeremy Renner And Elizabeth Olsen

  • CinemaRetro
By Lee Pfeiffer

Until it goes off the rails, writer/director Taylor Sheridan's "Wind River" shapes up to be a compelling murder mystery. The film's opening scene shows a young woman desperately running through a remote, snowy landscapes, obviously trying to outpace whoever or whatever is pursuing her.  Ultimately, we learn her fate when Cory Lambert (Jeremy Renner), a tracker who is assisting the police in the search for the missing girl, stumbles upon her body. Turns out she had been sexually abused prior to her death, which took place on the barren Wind River reservation for Native Americans in Wyoming. Cory has to deliver the bad news to the girl's father (Gil Birmingham), whose wife is already suffering from a mental disorder. Ironically, the victim, Natalie (Kelsey Asbille), was the best friend of Cory's own daughter, who died under tragic and unsolved circumstances a few years prior. Both

Wind River review

Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen star in a new thriller from the writer of Sicario and Hell Or High Water. Our review of Wind River...

In the three films we've seen from him so far, Taylor Sheridan has managed to give the classic western a contemporary twist each time. In Sicario, brilliantly directed by Denis Villeneuve, we saw how the never-ending War on Drugs has created a violent, lawless frontier on the Texas-Mexico border. Hell Or High Water, directed - brilliantly again - by David Mackenzie - set a story of outlaws and landowners against the backdrop of the global recession.

‘Wind River’ Review

Review by Matthew Turner

Stars: Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Gil Birmingham, Graham Greene, Jon Bernthal, Julia Jones, Kelsey Asbille, James Jordan | Written and Directed by Taylor Sheridan

Avengers co-stars Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen headline this snowbound mystery thriller from Taylor Sheridan, the writer of Sicario and Hell or High Water. Gripping and moving in equal measure, it’s being billed as Sheridan’s “proper” directorial debut, which probably says everything you need to know about his actual debut, the little-seen 2011 horror flick Vile.

Set in the remote Wind River Reservation in Wyoming, the film opens with a young Native American woman (Kelsey Asbille) running for her life, barefoot, in sub-zero conditions in the wintery wilderness. When she’s found, frozen to death, an autopsy reveals that she was raped, prompting the arrival of Vegas-based FBI agent Jane Banner (Olsen), who teams up with Native American sheriff Ben (Greene) to investigate.

Movie Review – Wind River (2017)

Wind River, 2017.

Directed by Taylor Sheridan.

Starring Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Graham Greene, Gil Birmingham and Jon Bernthal.

Synopsis:

When a young Native American woman is found dead in the snow on a reservation in Wyoming, the local sheriff calls in the FBI to investigate. The nearest available agent is very much a city girl and has to depend on a veteran tracker to help her find out who killed the woman and why.

After scripting Sicario for Denis Villeneuve and Hell Or High Water for David Mackenzie, Taylor Sheridan takes up the director’s chair, as well being on screen writing duty, for his third film in as many years.

Wind River moves from the barren New Mexican landscape of Hell Or High Water to the cold expanses of Wyoming in winter, where a young Native American woman is found dead in the snow. She’s been raped and beaten,

Wind River – Review

Gil Birmingham and Jeremy Renner in Wind River

Review by Stephen Tronicek

Taylor Sheridan’s Wind River feels wrong. It feels like something is rotting at the center of the film. Like something is trying to desperately escape, but can’t. That’s a good thing because that’s the case with each of the film’s characters. Each of them is held on the Wind River Indian Reservation, whether it be by choice or necessity. The problem is that the land kills whatever beauty appears there in the cold, and soon that comes bubbling up to the surface as Jeremy Renner’s Cory Lambert finds the dead body of a young girl leading to a domino effect of violence for all those involved, including FBI officer Jane Banner (portrayed by Elizabeth Olsen).

The tone at the start of Wind River is somewhat daunting. Sheridan’s otherwise effortless scriptwriting for
