AFM: Independent Financing Evolves, Adapts to New Market Realities

2 November 2016 10:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

With tried-and-true film financing models now far from reliable, with digital platforms offering a double-edged sword of bigger buying with aggressive competition, and with economic volatility overseas, many experts say global independent film financing is riskier than ever.

“We’re in a period of uncertainty, both domestically and internationally,” says IM Global CFO Miguel Palos, who’ll be speaking at the American Film Market’s Nov. 4 global film financing panel, the 360 View, which features industry heavyweights like Weinstein Co. COO/president David Glasser. “In the U.S., you [used to be able to] say, ‘If my budget is $30 [million]-$35 million and I spend $20 million on P&A, I’ll get a minimum amount from home video and a minimum MG from certain territories.’ Now Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and others are creating so much content that it’s difficult to model out what return you’ll get on your investment.”

But these new realities — and the ways buyers, sellers, and financiers are adapting to them — shed light on where the market is heading and some possible ways to navigate it. »

Rebecca Ferguson To Headline Upcoming Biopic The Lady And The Panda

28 October 2016 3:07 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation star Rebecca Ferguson has come attached to Ruth Harkness biopic The Lady and the Panda.

Billed as a UK/Chinese co-production, we understand that filming is due to commence next month in China, with locations including the foothills of the Himalayas. Justin Chadwick will direct from a script penned by Laura Bickford and Holly Gent Palmo.

A 1930s New York socialite, Ruth Harkness stole headlines left, right, and center after becoming the first person to transport a live panda from China to the United States. Doing so wasn’t easy, of course. Soon after the passing of her wealthy husband, Harkness took over his planned expedition to China and, after partnering with local guide Quentin Young, the two travelled down the famous Yangtze river before coming across an orphaned baby panda that they later called Su Lin.

It’s a story that went on to become a nationwide sensation (“Pandamonium! »

Myriad Pictures boards 'Altamira' sales for Efm

4 February 2016 5:07 AM, PST | ScreenDaily | See recent ScreenDaily news »

The Santa Monica-based sales, production and financing company will start talks with international buyers in Berlin on the historical drama starring Antonio Banderas.

Myriad holds sales rights to Altamira excluding Spain/Andorra, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Latin America – where Fox International will distribute – to the true story about an archaeologist and his daughter whose discovery of historic cave paintings sparks a firestorm.

Hugh Hudson (Chariots Of Fire) directed and Rupert Everett, Golshifteh Farahani, and Pierre Niney also star.

Olivia Hetreed and José Luis López-Linares wrote the screenplay about the father and daughter, whose achievement earns academic plaudits but scandalises their family for its empirical contradiction of the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Myriad Pictures will be showing exclusive first-look footage from the English-language film that shot on location in Spain.

Lucrecia Botín and Alvaro Longoria from Spain’s Morena Films produced Altamira with Andy Paterson from the UK’s Sympathetic Ink.
