Umedia Aims for Further Expansion in Second Decade

A multicultural entrepreneur at heart, Adrian Politowski has turned his Belgium-based Umedia venture into an international film financing powerhouse over the course of 10 years. The company, which started with three employees in a Brussels basement, now employs over 100 people and boasts subsidiaries in London, Los Angeles, Paris and Brussels.

A Sweden-born, Oxford-educated businessman who has Polish and Bangladeshi origins, Politowski — with partners Nadia Khamlichi, Jeremy Burdek — has recently expanded Umedia’s scope, diving into film production and developing TV series

“When we started a decade ago we were only providing services, raising money from tax rebates, and through the years we’ve gained knowledge of the film industry and cultivated a large network that we’re now able to tap into to produce our own content,” Politowski says. He adds that he would like Umedia to lead-produce or co-produce six to eight projects a year.

To date, he’s been involved via Umedia in 230 films,

‘The Family Stone’ – A Christmas film about acceptance, and letting go

The Family Stone

Written and directed by Thomas Bezucha

2005, USA

The Family Stone is that movie that takes from Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner? except rather than the central theme being race, the subtext revolves around a liberal brood accepting a conservative opposite as one of their own. Immediately we garner a sense of who the Stone family is, and how much they rely on one another, when we set down on the lived in quarters of the family. Dad Kelly and mom Sybill live in their quaint house that they raised their five kids in, and are especially fond of them, all of whom have vastly different lives, but share their Bohemian lifestyle that Kelly and Sybill instilled in every one of them.

They may not agree with how they live their personal lives, but they’re happy in that they raised them all to be true to themselves.

Though Actuals Lower Than Sunday Estimates, Gomez, Hudgens, Franco and Bikini Combo Has Year's Highest Average

Gomez, Hudgens, Franco, guns and bikinis: Outstanding domestic debut Harmony Korine's crime flick Spring Breakers currently boasts the year's highest per-theater average. That's no small feat. As per final Us/Canada weekend box-office numbers published on the web site Box Office Mojo, this past weekend (March 15-17) the film raked in $263,002 at three locations (two in New York City, one in Los Angeles). That's down slightly from the studio's $270,000 estimate released on Sunday, but still enough to average a fantastic $87,667 per venue. (Pictured above: Gomez [scroll down for more on Gomez's box-office performance to date; pictured below: bad girls in bikinis in court.) One of the highest opening weekend per-theater averages ever Spring Breakers was down one spot on Box Office Mojo's post-1982 chart of opening-weekend per-theater averages. At #23, the movie is sandwiched between two Academy Award winners: Tom Hooper / Colin Firth's The King's Speech with $88,863 and Steven Spielberg / Daniel Day-Lewis' Lincoln with $85,846. Once inflation is factored in, Spring Breakers drops to the 52nd spot (down nine spots from yesterday's estimates), landing between Daniel Myrick

Over/Under: ‘Love Actually’ vs. ‘The Family Stone’

Recently, I found myself looking for a movie to watch that was Christmasy and festive, but not necessarily something so holiday-themed that it had Santa Clauses, reindeer, and Jesuses in it. You know, something about normal people but set around the time of the holidays. While perusing all of the top ten holiday movie lists that I could find around the web, I saw one title keep popping up again and again, Richard Curtis’s Love Actually. I never saw this one when it came out, it just looked like another generic romantic comedy to me, but it turns out a lot of people love to watch it every year around the Christmas season. And further research led me to the fact that a lot of people mention it as one of the few romantic comedies that’s actually good from the last decade as well. Sounded strong enough for me to give it a watch. It

Contagion (12A)

(Steven Soderbergh, 2011, Us) Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Jennifer Ehle. 106 mins

Much as he did with Traffic, Soderbergh connects the dots of a global issue and makes it look like something authoritative and contemporary rather than a celebrity disaster movie. Here it's a viral pandemic, briskly tracked in forensic detail and techno-backed montages. The response from health authorities and the panicked populace is all too credible, though once the dots are connected, we're too freaked out to remember why we were supposed to be watching.

We Need To Talk About Kevin (15)

(Lynne Ramsay, 2011, UK/Us) Tilda Swinton, Ezra Miller. 112 mins

Swinton's fine performance and Ramsay's visual intelligence add up to a devastating portrait of motherhood. After a high-school shooting, a mother's existence becomes a living hell.
