Luda, What happened?

28 December 2010 3:58 AM, PST | ShadowAndAct | See recent ShadowAndAct news »

After making great club bangers, some rather questionable music videos, (cough… clearing throat), and the masterpiece of uncut musical clips for his group Disturbing the Peace with P. Poppin directed by wunderkind duo Fat Cats, Ludacris had set sights on feature films as an actor.

Having Being John Malkovich director Spike Jonze direct his clip for Move, it gave witness to his charm, along with a comfortable, relaxed vibe with the camera. Blink and you may miss his guest spot in John Singleton’s 2 Fast 2 Furious; his next performance was as a carjacker who spoke with grace and intelligence in Best Picture Oscar Winner Crash, leading to strong performances that proved a great future that might very well rival Mos Def, with his work in Hustle and Flow, plus a two-episode story arc on Law and Order: Svu, which almost garnered a nomination. Also enjoyable are decent flicks like Gamer and Rock ‘N Rolla. »

Usher, Yeasayer And Kanye West: The Top 25 Songs Of 2010

8 December 2010 8:00 AM, PST | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

The end of 2010 is almost upon us, which is why MTV News is rounding up the Top Songs of 2010. We had over two dozen MTV News staffers submit their own personal lists of their 25 favorite songs, and from those lists we derived a master list whose top 10 will be slowly rolling out over the course of this week. Check out one of the 25 lists below, with an argument or two for the greatness of some of the under-appreciated tunes of the year.

By Joel Hanek

1. "Power," Kanye West

2010 is Kanye's year. Just to illustrate how far this man has risen, two presidents have directly commented on his actions. After his incident at the 2009 VMAs, he disappeared, and everyone anticipated that the loquacious West would have some retort to his vilification. Months of silence passed when all of a sudden in May he dropped "Power." The Internets promptly exploded. The song »

Quick Snaps: A Drink and Chat with Geoff Marslett about 'Mars'

2 December 2010 9:00 AM, PST | Slackerwood | See recent Slackerwood news »

If you missed my Fantastic Fest 2010 Guide: How to Drink Like an Austinite, than you might not know that I'm a craft beer enthusiast. I am also a member of Black Star Co-op, the world's first cooperatively owned and worker managed brewpub. I stopped by the pub this week to try out featured beers from Jester King, a new brewery located between Oak Hill and Dripping Springs.

A fellow member at the bar struck up a conversation about our agreed-upon favorite -- the Wychmaker Rye Pale Ale -- and told me he was one of the earliest members of the co-op. With almost 2,500 members, being one of the early charter members is pretty impressive. However, he said that he's been so busy working and promoting a movie that he'd not been able to visit the newly opened pub until now. Of course I had to ask about his film -- an animated romantic comedy. »

Trailer for Michael Rapaport’s A Tribe Called Quest Sundance Doc ‘Beats Rhymes & Life’

1 December 2010 1:51 PM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Can I kick it? The in competition line-up for Sundance Film Festival 2011 only went up a few hours ago, and I’ve already discovered a trailer for a documentary entry. Actor Michael Rapaport (Special, Big Fan, Boston Public) makes his directorial debut with Beats Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest, chronicling the story of one of my favorite hip-hop groups. The doc features interviews with members Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Jarobi as well as Kanye West, Nas, Mos Def, and the Roots, who were all inspired by them. Check out the trailer below.

Synopsis: The story of the rise and influence of one of the most innovative and influential hip hop bands of all time, the collective known as A Tribe Called Quest.

The 2011 Sundance Film Festival runs January 20-30 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah.

What do you think of the trailer? »

Jeffrey Wright on Returning to Broadway with 'Free Man'

19 November 2010 11:35 AM, PST | Essence | See recent Essence news »

This season, the Great White Way gets a little more brotherly love as actor Jeffrey Wright and rapper Mos Def reunite on the stage for "A Free Man of Color," a look at politics and race in 19-century New Orleans, by playwright John Guare. Fans are more likely to spot the uber private Wright -- best known for his command turns in films like "Boycott" and "Basquiat" and theatrical masterpieces like "Angels in America" -- biking through his Brooklyn neighborhood than riding in a limo, or hunkered down with his wife, actress Carmen Ejogo, and their two kids at their favorite neighborhood diner, than chopping it up with fellow actors at some Manhattan hotspot »

Review – Kanye’s “Runaway” Is Beautiful, Dark, and Twisted

24 October 2010 10:41 AM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

I like Kanye West. That seems almost like a subversive thing to say, doesn’t it? Over the past year, the rapper has established himself as one of the most hated people in the music industry, mostly due to his 2009 Vma interruption of Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech. We all know the one.

But Kanye has really pulled a brilliant PR turnaround, thanks to the new technology of Twitter, which West joined earlier this year. He quickly became one of the most followed voices on the site, and also one of the funniest. He also began giving away free music every Friday. The tactic, called G.O.O.D. Fridays (the G.O.O.D. is his record company, “Getting Out Our Dreams”), releases some star-studded music featuring artists like Jay-z, Mos Def, and John Legend. For free.

One of the songs he hasn’t released for free is his latest single, »

Thoughts On “A Free Man Of Color” w/ Jeffrey Wright, Mos Def, Joseph Marcell & Others

24 October 2010 8:01 AM, PDT | ShadowAndAct | See recent ShadowAndAct news »

So… I saw Jeffrey Wright, Mos Def, Nicole Beharie, Joseph Marcell, Paul Dano, and a host of other acclaimed talents in George C. Wolfe’s direction of John Guare’s sprawling stage drama A Free Man of Color. And even though this is primarily a film blog, given the names involved in this, it made sense to share my thoughts on the play here. I think I’d be remiss if I didn’t

I’m certainly not a theater buff, and thus don’t have a large pool of knowledge to pull from, so as opposed to my usual film review style, I instead went with a 10-point breakdown of my reactions to the play, which you can read below:

1 – Mos Def’s is by far the weakest performance. He certainly has the cred. But this particular piece wasn’t suited for him. He stuck out and not because he was a standout. »

Love and Death, the New Album from Ghanaian Legend Ebo Taylor

16 October 2010 12:37 PM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Ebo Taylor is one of the funkiest people to ever walk the earth. Love and Death, his first internationally released studio album out October 24th on Strut Records, is a continuation of Taylor's already legendary legacy as a composer and performer of African music. Starting in the late 1950's, Taylor was an extremely influential figure in the Ghanaian music scene. He composed, arranged and performed in several leading highlife bands such as the Stargazers and Broadway Dance Band. He traveled to London with his own ensemble in 1962, The Black Star Highlife Band sponsored by the Ghanaian High Commission. It was in London that he collaborated and experimented with other African musicians such as Fela Anikulapo Kuti, "I knew Fela very well. He was my friend. He would say, 'Taylor why don't you play »

Trailer For Broadway Production Of “The Scottsboro Boys”

15 October 2010 2:33 PM, PDT | ShadowAndAct | See recent ShadowAndAct news »

Trailer for the upcoming Broadway musical, The Scottsboro Boys, based on the real-life case of 9 black teenage boys falsely accused of raping 2 white women, in 1931 Alabama, which ultimately provoked national outrage, helping to spark the Civil Rights movement.

Originally an Off-Broadway show directed by Tony Award-winner and choreographer Susan Stroman, Broadway’s Lyceum Theatre will house the production, which opens October 31st.

Up next? A Scottsboro Boys big-screen movie, maybe? There was a 2007 straight-to-dvd title based on the story, starring Timothy Hutton as criminal defense attorney Samuel Leibowitz, who heads south from New York to defend the 9 young men.

The story was of also believed to have been of some influence on Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, which eventually became a film as well.

Not sure if I’ll be seeing this; there’s at least one other play on my to-see list ahead of it (specifically, A Free Man Of Color, »

Music: Review: Bilal: Airtight’s Revenge

11 October 2010 10:00 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Bilal has ample reason to sing the blues. The charismatic soulman roared out of the gates with the support of heavyweights like Dr. Dre, J-Dilla, Common, and Mos Def on his brilliant 2001 debut 1st Born Second, but the album underperformed commercially, and a major-label follow-up was shelved. So it’s not surprising that the singer-songwriter’s long-in-the-works second album, Airtight’s Revenge, finds him in profound pain. Much of the dark, bruised album has the raw, vulnerable feel of an intense internal monologue. On “All Matter,” Bilal describes love as “cool on the outside, hot in the middle,” a »

Gorillaz Get Tour And Studio Support From Little Dragon

By Joel Hanek

This past Friday (October 8th), the amalgamated animated legend collective that is Gorillaz kicked off the American leg of their world tour at Madison Square Garden in New York City. After a supporting set from N.E.R.D., Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett's brainchild manifested itself with the help of a group of venerable guests like Lou Reed, former Clash members Mick Jones and Paul Simonon, Bobby Womack and Mos Def. Standing with the impressive list of veterans was relative newcomer Little Dragon, the much-acclaimed Swedish band who, like Gorillaz, defy genres and mix sounds ranging from dancehall and R&B to electro and new wave. The band has been working with Albarn and crew in various forms throughout the year, having collaborated on two tracks for Gorillaz' stellar 2010 release Plastic Beach.

M.I.A., La Roux to Appear on Kanye West's New Album

8 October 2010 3:05 AM, PDT | Celebrity Mania | See recent Celebrity Mania news »

M.I.A., La Roux and Alicia Keys, among others, are set to appear on Kanye West's new album. The "Runaway" rapper announced his fifth album will be called "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" earlier this week, and while Kanye has previously confirmed certain stars will appear, including Jay-z, RZA and Beyonce Knowles, it seems his guest list is much longer than previously thought.

As well as those previously mentioned, Kanye said he's also been in the studio with Kid Cudi, Mos Def and Santigold and that indie musician Justin Vernon is "all over" the album. One track which has already been leaked, "Lost In The World", features Justin's vocals.

Kanye's celebrity album cast could be part of his striving to fill the gap left by "King Of Pop" Michael Jackson's sudden death last year, a role he sees himself in line to fulfill.

He told the Daily Mirror newspaper, »

Popstars Make Good: 10 Singers Who (Eventually) Proved They Could Act

7 October 2010 11:28 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

When it was announced that Justin Timberlake would be taking on a role in David Fincher‘s The Social Network, many bloggers and filmgoers were probably skeptical if the former boy-bander was ready for such a top-tier project. Timberlake has always been hilarious on SNL (even winning an Emmy for his participation on the sketch comedy show) but his filmography has always left much to be desired (The Love Guru, Southland Tales). With The Social Network becoming a smash hit and receiving near universal acclaim it is clear that the pop star has finally managed to deliver a performance worthy of a legitimate actor.

Casting pop stars is always a gamble as many have very little or no acting experience and often come with larger-than-life personas that don’t mix well with the films they are placed in. Stars such as Barbara Streisand and Diana Ross paved the way for »

Buddy Bites: 'Bones' Spoiler, 'Munster' Reboot and 'Lone Star' Second Life

Start your day off with a bite of the latest TV news in 300 words.

Brennan's Pov

Here is a Bones spoiler to wrap your head around. An upcoming episode of Bones will be told primarily from Brennan's point of view. Executive producer, Stephen Nathan, says "It's a very stylized episode where Brennan is investigating a murder of someone who appears to be her." This storytelling device has been used before, most recently in an episode of House when Mos Def suffered from Locked-in Syndrome. It is a fascinating way to see a different perspective, but I have one issue. If the whole thing is from Brennan's Pov, does that mean we don't get to see our girl the entire episode? Let's hope not! Which Kanye West 'G.O.O.D. Fridays' Track Has Been The Best So Far?

27 September 2010 10:30 AM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

Kanye West's "G.O.O.D. Fridays" series is quite an ambitious project, but he has managed to keep it up with impressive results. West's guarantee — one free song every Friday until the end of the year — was a bold one, and most everybody assumed these tracks would (necessarily) vary wildly in quality. But West has managed to deliver top-notch tracks featuring inventive beats and a wide variety of guests (including A-list talent like Jay-z, Rick Ross and Swizz Beatz).

So far, there have been seven tracks released as part of the "G.O.O.D. Fridays" series (not counting "Runaway," which surfaced online shortly after its debut at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, though was never presented as part of the series on Kanye's official Web site), and each one has had at least one key moment of transcendence. But which one has been the best so far? »
