Living Proof

11 December 2008 12:59 AM, PST | backstage.com | See recent Backstage news »

Since the days of silent films, the lives of real people have been compelling movie subjects, and 2008 was no different, with bios of performers and politicians leading this year's award contenders. Nixon Gets Frosted Ron Howard's film Frost/Nixon, which Peter Morgan based on his award-winning stage play, tells the mesmerizing story of a disgraced American president and the tenacious journalist who butted heads with him in front of 45 million viewers. The historic interviews occurred over four intense broadcasts in 1977, culled from 28 hours of footage. Richard Nixon had been pressured to resign the presidency in 1974 in the wake of the Watergate scandal, and jet-setting TV host David Frost was determined to elicit candor — and a public apology — from a man with a reputation as a shrewd, self-serving political player. Frank Langella plays Nixon and Michael Sheen plays Frost in a rare case of two actors re-creating their roles from »

Exclusive Interview: Cadillac Records Director Darnell Martin

4 December 2008 2:35 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

When Darnell Martin made her 1994 feature debut, I Like It Like That, she was the first African-American woman to direct a studio feature . Since then she's been largely absent from feature filmmaking, with the exception of 2001's Prison Song, and has directed episodes of TV shows like Law & Order and Grey's Anatomy. But 14 years after her debut, Martin is back to the big screen with Cadillac Records, her passion project about the birth of rock and roll starting with the bluesmen at Chess Records. At an earlier press conference Martin, a tiny blond woman, got nothing but love from her actors, who include Jeffrey Wright, Mos Def, Columbus Short and Gabrielle Union. In a later one-on-one interview, she returned the love right back to them-- including effusive, no-bullshit praise for Beyonce, whom she calls an "angel." Opening This Week: This year's '60s music biopic, Ron Howard's Oscar bid and one last superhero movie

2 December 2008 11:23 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

By Neil Pedley

Providing the requisite stopgap between showy Thanksgiving distractions and award season stragglers, female directors and assorted indie debutantes are making a strong showing this week.

"The Black Balloon"

'What's Eating Elissa Down?' is the question to ask as the award-winning director of Aussie shorts makes the jump to features with this semi-autobiographical tale of a frustrated adolescent on the verge of manhood weighed down by his responsibilities to his autistic younger brother. Daytime soap star Rhys Wakefield takes the role of the Gilbert Grape-esque Thomas, a burdened army brat charged with his brother's care while his parents drag the two up and down the country until he meets Jackie, a free spirit who teaches him how to shed his bitterness. The always impressive Toni Collette anchors this teenage ensemble as the boy's mother, Maggie. Luke Ford and Gemma Ward co-star.

Opens in New York and Los Angeles. »

Beyonce and Jay-z Roll Cadillac Records into NYC

2 December 2008 7:05 AM, PST | Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news »

The cast of Cadillac Records brought their movie to New York City last night, highlighted by Beyonce Knowles and Jay-z. The newlyweds and longtime loves hardly ever do the red carpet together, so it's such a treat to see him out to support his wife looking so happy. They're always having a blast somewhere around the world, but with her opening up a little about their marriage and seeing them together here might mean a new leaf for B and J. They weren't the only ones at the premiere, Adrien Brody had Elsa Pataky on his arm as always while Gabrielle Union and Emmanuelle Chriqui looked gorgeous solo. The movie hits theaters this Friday and between the cast there's more than enough beauty to go around, though Beyonce swears we won't be able to recognize any Sasha Fierce in her Etta James. To see lots more from the premiere including Kelly Ripa, »

Review | Blue(s) Movie: Darnell Martin's "Cadillac Records"

1 December 2008 5:13 AM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

by Nick Pinkerton (December 1, 2008) When Syd Nathan, the CEO of King Records, died in 1968, James Brown, the label's greatest star, bought the desk from Nathan's office and had it fitted with a gold plaque reading "I Remember the Man Syd Nathan." Nathan was white, and Brown boastfully black--so how to account for this? If we were to believe the movies' official history of rock music, we can't; the narrative is one of the grudging black artist's innovation, white owner's exploitation, and cracker shyster's appropriation--the attitude summarized in Mos Def's insipid, ahistorical song "Rock 'n' Roll." »

dream cast: hypothetical ‘Wizard of Oz’ remake

27 November 2008 11:27 AM, PST | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

It’s Thursday, so it’s time to remake an 80s classic TV show or movie with an all-new cast. This week I’m stretching the theme a bit to include the classic 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz, which exerted a profound effect on the mindset of Generation X via its constant airings on TV in the 1970s and 80s, particularly as a Thanksgiving tradition. (In my review of the film, I mention it as a holiday perennial.) My dream cast for a modern update: Daniel Gale: Michael Cera The Wizard of Oz: Mos Def The Scarecrow: Jude Law The Cowardly Lion: Will Farrell The Tin Man: Keanu Reeves Glinda: Kate Winslet The Wicked Wizard: Alan Rickman I’m gender-switching Dorothy because I love Michael Cera, and because he has the kind of sweetness that feels more like Dorothy’s than almost any female actor of his age I can »

Trailer Park: Monsters, Panthers and Fanboys

7 November 2008 6:03 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

We've got another bushel or so of trailers for films just over the horizon. How promising are they? You tell us.

Monsters Vs. Aliens

Dreamworks latest animated feature has a group of terrestrial monsters (a blob, a fish man, a giant bug, a human-sized cockroach/mad scientist and a very tall woman named Susan) fighting off an alien attack. This homage to 1950s sci fi features the voices of Seth Rogen, Will Arnet, Paul Rudd, Hugh Laurie, Reese Witherspoon, Kiefer Sutherland, Rainn Wilson, Stephen Colbert and looks flat out awesome. It opens on March 27 but I really want to see it Now.

Pink Panther 2

While it's hard for me to work up much enthusiasm for a sequel to a remake I didn't see which was based on a series that had pretty much run out of steam by the end, Steve Martin's Inspector Clouseau does have an endearing »

First Full Trailer for Darnell Martin's Cadillac Records

4 November 2008 3:31 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Sex had a sound? Danger had a rhythm? I'm asking these questions because I'm not sure if I believe them. The full trailer for Sony's Cadillac Records has finally debuted and it doesn't seem that impressive. It actually looks kind of fun, in a comedic sense, and has one hell of a cast - Beyoncé Knowles, Adrien Brody, Jeffrey Wright, Gabrielle Union, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Mos Def, and so many more. I'll definitely give it a shot but I'm not expecting to walk out amazed. It definitely seems entertaining but not as everlasting as some of the other recent music history exposés like Dreamgirls and Talk To Me.
