24 great comedy shows that deserve more love

We asked Den Of Geek’s writers to recommend brilliant comedy shows that deserve to have more of a fuss made about them. Here they are...

Banging a drum about stuff we love is more or less our remit on Den Of Geek - hence what many readers have started referring to as the ‘inexplicably regular' appearance of Statham, squirrels and Harold Bishop from Neighbours on these pages.

To that end then, we asked our writers which comedy shows (past and present, UK or otherwise, on TV, radio, or online…) deserved more praise, and here are the ones they chose. You might already like them too, or you might discover something new to dig out and enjoy. That’s the fun of it.

Please note that this list isn’t ranked in any order, nor is it exhaustive. It’s compiled from the opinions of a group of different people,

The Americans, Mad Men, Trying Again: What to watch this weekend

From the best of Us drama to classic British Saturday night TV fun, there is so much to watch this weekend you won't want to leave the house at all.

So let us, along with our friends at Now TV, pick out five of the best shows to watch.

1. The Americans

Where: ITV

When: 10.15pm on Saturday

This Cold War-era spy drama is one of the must-see Us shows right now. Tucked away in ITV's late night schedules, it's a visual and aural treat for anyone who grew up in the '80s - big hair! Fleetwood Mac! Phil Collins! - and it's also a seriously tense depiction of life for two Russians undercover in Reagan's America. Now in its second season, it's not too late to get on board to find out why we're hooked on this on Saturday nights.

2. Mad Men

Where: Sky Atlantic on Now TV

The Smoke on Sky1: Did it light up our screens?

There's been a relatively small number of television shows focusing exclusively on firefighters - there's Us series Chicago Fire and Rescue Me, plus of course London's Burning - but there nonetheless exists that media-friendly image of a heroic fireman emerging miraculously unscathed from a raging inferno - perhaps carrying a wailing infant in his arms.

From its claustrophobic, heart-in-your-mouth opening onwards, Sky1's new drama The Smoke is working to subvert the popular notions associated with firefighters and the depiction of their lives on screen.

In harrowing early scenes, Jamie Bamber's Kev Allison lies horribly burnt - his chilling screams filling the air - and from hereon in, it's clear that this is no glamourised take on the world of firefighters.

No-one in The Smoke emerges unscathed. In this opening hour, our lead is repeatedly beaten to his knees - sometimes literally - by life.

The charismatic Bamber is a strong lead,

Midsomer Murders Christmas special features baby for Barnaby: First photo

The Midsomer Murders Christmas special will feature a surprise twist, as Dci Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon) and his wife Sarah (Fiona Dolman) discover that they are expecting a baby.

The new arrival was written into the ITV detective series when Dolman discovered she was pregnant. Her baby, Madeleine Charlotte, was born in July.

"I didn't think I'd ever have a child so I feel very blessed," said the single mum. "I am very happy to bring up the baby on my own as I have incredible support and love from my family.

"Things might not be perfect but from the moment I held Madeleine in my arms we felt like a team. I've got so much love around me, so I know we're going to be all right.

"Everyone on Midsomer Murders has been so supportive and lovely. I went back in October to film the fifth episode and Neil was very excited for me.

A History Of Syria With Dan Snow

9pm, BBC2

Why has Syria descended so quickly into civil war? Travelling in the country and hearing voices from both sides of the conflict, Dan Snow offers the historical perspective. It's a story that encompasses the split between Sunni and Shia Islam, the brutality of French colonial rule and the rise to power of Hafez al-Assad, who offered stability in exchange for establishing a police state. A sobering portrait of a multicultural nation where a lasting peace can't be won in battle. Jonathan Wright

Blu-ray Review: Hard Boiled Sweets

Hard Boiled Sweets

Stars: Philip Barantini, Elizabeth Berrington, Adrian Bower, Paul Freeman, Liz May Brice, Laura Greenwood | Written and Directed by David L.G. Hughes

Guy Ritchie has a lot to answer for. Following the success of his British gangster flick Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels we’ve had a myriad of rip-offs and wannabes of which Hard Boiled Sweets is one. Taking inspiration from Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction and Guy Ritchie’s aforementioned gangster flick, the film weaves together a number of different stories and characters into this tale of seaside gangsters – the trouble is right from the get-go you know exactly where the film is headed and how all the plot threads will come together; watching everything pan out as you’ve already guessed makes for very dull viewing!

The film follows mob boss ‘Shrewd’ Eddie (Freeman), a Southend-on-Sea gangster who is used to getting whatever he wants; he runs the town,
