Daily Briefing. New Issues: Scope and Film Comment

9 November 2011 3:44 AM, PST | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

Go ahead and tell us you click it for the articles, but there's no shame in admitting that what you're really after are the book reviews. And the new issue of Scope, the online journal of film and TV studies from the University of Nottingham, has ten new book reviews. Sampling from one of them, Daniele Rugo writes, "As the title provocatively announces Dudley Andrew's book What Cinema Is! engages in the complex task of responding to André Bazin's attempt to identify the core of the cinematographic creation…. Andrew develops an inspired and insightful, if perhaps nostalgic, roadmap delineating how cinema should proceed to remain faithful to its origins (or to Bazin's original ideas)." Let Catherine Grant be your guide to the full issue.

It's the end of the week, you're tired, I'm tired, so let's see what casting news Hollywood has flung out in the last 20-odd hours. Emma Stone has signed onto yet another snarky romantic comedy, this one titled "He's Fuckin' Perfect."  She'll play a "social media savvy girl who is pessimistic about love, and vets her friends' dates to find flaws. When that process leads her to uncover the perfect guy, she decides to use her Internet research skills to turn herself into his perfect match."   Well, props to the rom-com genre for finally realizing Google and Facebooks were things people used! The film is being produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay's Gary Sanchez Productions, and was penned by McKay's assistant, Lauryn Kahn. [Deadline] Renaissance thespian Brian Cox is returning to comedy, and is joining the cast of Jay Roach's "Dog Fight" alongside Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis. »

James Franco and Others Are ‘Spring Breakers’; Ben Kingsley to Inhabit ‘A Doll’s House’; Rashida Jones ‘Decoding Annie Parker’

1 November 2011 4:59 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

We’re hearing from Variety that James Franco and Harmony Korine will make their second pairing in Spring Breakers, something I would call a drama — but you never know with this guy. The film follows “four college-aged girls who rob a fast food restaurant to afford spring break in Florida, only to get arrested upon their arrival.”

Franco has been locked to play “Alien, a rapping drug and arms dealer who bails them out and entices them to kill his arch-rival, a murderer who is appropriately named Arch,” and Emma Roberts is in talks for the part of “one of the girls, Candy, a Southern brunette who feeds off danger.” Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez are also in talks (why are you looking at me like I’m joking?). Should they join, the latter will appear as “a religious girl who isn’t a thrill-seeker like the rest of the group. »
