Martin Scorsese Extends Paramount Deal to 2019
Martin Scorsese’s Sikelia Productions has extended its overall feature deal with Paramount Pictures through 2019.

“Marty is one of our industry’s most prolific and celebrated filmmakers and he is also an integral part of the Paramount family,” said Paramount Chairman and CEO Brad Grey. “We are looking forward to many more years and many more great films at Paramount Pictures.”

The partnership has resulted in “The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Shutter Island,” “Hugo” and the Rolling Stones documentary “Shine a Light.”

Paramount will release Scorsese’s historical drama “Silence,” starring Liam Neeson and Andrew Garfield, with Scorsese producing and directing. Jay Cocks and Scorsese wrote the screenplay for the film, which has not set a release date.

The studio said the deal covers development of “The Devil in the White City,” directed by Scorsese, with Leonardo DiCaprio starring and producing with Jennifer Davisson. The movie is written by Billy Ray

‘Law & Order’ Veteran Writer-Producer Rene Balcer Drops UTA to Return to CAA

“Law & Order” veteran writer-producer Rene Balcer has left UTA to return to his original agency, CAA.

Balcer joined UTA, which also represents “L&O” creator Dick Wolf, in 2010 after first signing with CAA in 2001.

“I remained on good terms with (CAA), just as I remain on good terms with UTA where I still have projects that we’re working on together,” Balcer said in an email.

The Emmy winner will be represented by CAA agents Adam Berkowitz and Rob Kenneally.

Balcer is currently developing the FBI period drama “WonderWorld” at Starz with Owen Wilson and fellow “L&O” alum Fred Berner. Balcer will serve as showrunner, in addition to writing and exec producing the series.

He’s also working on the mystery series “DarkNet” for Kapital Entertainment and an untitled TV show for China Media Capital (Shanghai).

Balcer has written for the “Law & Order” franchise since its start in 1990. He

The drama is set in the 1980s and centers on two FBI agents as they infiltrate the shady porn industry. Starz has announced that it is developing “WonderWorld,” an hourlong drama with Owen Wilson, Rene Balcer, Fred Berner and Regina Lee.

“WonderWorld” is set in the 1980s and centers on two FBI agents as they infiltrate the violent mob-controlled porn industry.

James Caan and Esai Morales joined the cast for Season 2 of Magic City, the Starz original series set in 1950s-era Miami at the glamorous Miramar Playa Hotel. The Criterion Collection Announce February 2012 Blu-ray Slate Including World on a Wire

The Criterion Collection continually release some of the best and most important films (not to mention the best picture, sound and supplements packages) one could hope to find in the Blu-ray format and today's announcement of their February releases further cements this belief.

In February, The Criterion Collection will be releasing six films, five new additions to the numbered spine count, as well as one upgrade. The upgraded title consists of two films, La Jeéte and Sans Soleil, directed by Chris Marker. Both films, the former being about time travel through the use of still imagery, the latter about a trip from Africa to Japan, are completely different but inherently connected.

Law & Order Ri…not so fast!

Now it seems the announcement of the death of NBC’s flagship series Law & Order was a bit premature. Word is that the network and producer Dick Wolf are still in negotiations for a 21st season for the show, nor has he been given any official word from the network that the show has been canceled.

The situation behind the scenes is that both NBC and Wolf has agreed to a final shortened new season back in March which would avoid the network paying a penalty to Wolf, which he would have received if the show didn’t come back for another season.

As part of the new agreement for a new season, TNT would have been asked to kick in part of the financing for the new season in exchange for first-run broadcast rights. However things went south when NBC asked Wolf to accept a reduced license fee and

'Trial' gavel to Rydell, Green

Oscar-nominated director Mark Rydell has been tapped as an executive producer of the fourth installment in NBC's Law & Order franchise, Trial by Jury. On the Dick Wolf series, set to premiere sometime next season, Rydell will share showrunner duties with fellow exec producer Walon Green, who penned the pilot. Rydell will shepherd production, while Oscar-nominated writer Green will oversee writing for the series, which is expected to star Law & Order veteran Jerry Orbach. Rydell will be based in New York, where all Law & Order series are filmed, while Green will be bicoastal. Rydell joins the ranks of established directors who serve as New York-based production showrunners of the other three Law & Order series: Matthew Penn (Law & Order), Ted Kotcheff (Law & Order: SVU) and Fred Berner (Law & Order: Criminal Intent).
