USA Network is keeping its foot on the gas when it comes to scripted series development.

The cabler has given a cast-contingent pilot order to drama “Stanistan,” a dramedy about a group of State Department workers, CIA operatives and journalists working in a fictional Middle Eastern country. Project was developed at Fox earlier this year.

USA has also unveiled a slew of drama, comedy and limited-series development prospects from such producers as Jodie Foster (pictured), Carlton Cuse, Peter Tolan, Amy Poehler and Gregory Nava. The development slate reinforces USA’s focus on broadening the scope of its original series, particularly dramas, beyond the blue-sky and action fare that has clicked for the NBCU cabler in the past.

“This slate represents the next generation of originals at USA, with a focus on dramas that are more serialized, provocative and culturally resonant,” said USA prexy Chris McCumber. “We’re very much committed »

Alfre Woodard Will Play the President, “Community” Takes on “G.I. Joe” and Why “Scandal” Had to Kill Off a Character

Drop Dead Diva creator Josh Berman promises the legal drama’s final season, “is going to be a very satisfying season where all the ends are tied up.”

Dan Bucatinsky says to The Wrap that creatively it was necessary for Scandal to kill a major character, “The threat of death on a show like this, if it doesn’t pay off occasionally, the audience begins to scream bulls–t.” He’s right, you can’t have big cliffhangers if everyone expects all the major characters to survive. (See: massacre, Moldavian.)

First the ABC Family pilot Alice in Arabia raised eyebrows due to a description that seemed potentially offensive. Then, a review of the pilot script by Buzzfeed that called it “dotted with cultural inaccuracies and stereotypes.” Amid all that controversy, ABC Family has scrapped the pilot. Don’t worry, we’ll probably get to have the same debate when FX’s Tryant debuts. »
