23 Things We Learned From Rian Johnson’s ‘The Brothers Bloom’ Commentary

26 June 2014 11:00 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

If you’re not convinced more Star Wars movies is a good idea, then the news that Rian Johnson will be writing and directing Star Wars Episode VIII should win you over. Johnson knows structure, action, comedy and character, making him the ideal filmmaker to make Star Wars fresh and exciting again. Not only do his talents make him the right filmmaker for the job, but so does his thematic interests. Looper and Johnson’s second picture, The Brothers Bloom, are about how much control someone has over their own narrative. Bloom (Adrien Brody) feels like he’s living a story written by his brother Stepehen (Mark Ruffalo), while Old Joe (Bruce Willis) and Young Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) battle over the course of their shared, separate life. In short, a franchise focused on creating your own destiny is right up Johnson’s alley. Out of Johnson’s three films so far, The Brothers Bloom »

Rian Johnson directing 'Episode VIII' is a sign of the thinking behind the 'Star Wars' series

20 June 2014 10:00 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

The announcement of Rian Johnson as the writer/director of "Star Wars Episode VIII" is exciting for a number of reasons, not least of which is because it indicates something about the way Lucasfilm views the sequel trilogy. If I were to guess, I would say Marvel isn't going to hire many more writer/directors in the future, even if James Gunn and Joss Whedon both crush it with "Guardians Of The Galaxy" and "Avengers: Age Of Ultron." The fall-out from the "Ant-Man" situation has been fairly brutal, and while I'm curious to see what Peyton Reed and Adam McKay make of the project they're inheriting, the loss of the Edgar Wright version is just plain going to sting. Lucasfilm's making these announcements in a flurry right now, it seems, and it's because they have to if these movies are all going to hit the amazing schedule that they've announced »

Rian Johnson in Star Wars talks

20 June 2014 1:20 PM, PDT | ScreenDaily | See recent ScreenDaily news »

Screen has confirmed that the director of Looper is in discussions with Lucasfilm to direct Episode VIII and write a treatment for Episode IX of the Star Wars series.

Johnson discovered international fame as a filmmaker of note following his work on Looper, the 2012 sci-fi time travel mystery that starred Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt.

That followed his breakout Sundance hit Brick. He has also directed The Brothers Bloom and, most recently, several episodes of the TV smash Breaking Bad.

Johnson’s longtime producer Ram Bergman will be among the producers roster for Ep VIII.

Jj Abrams is currently shooting Episode VII at Pinewood in the UK. Cast member Harrison Ford recently injured his ankle during shooting and is expected to return to the set later this summer. That film is scheduled to open through Disney in December 2015.

As previously reported, Josh Trank and Gareth Edwards are on board to direct spin-off films centring on elements »

Abrams Will Pass the Baton to Rian Johnson For Star Wars: Episode VIII & IX

20 June 2014 12:57 PM, PDT | Cinelinx | See recent Cinelinx news »

Talk about some unexpected news!  Fans are still scouring the internet for any scrap of information related to Star Wars: Episode VII (which is currently filming), but today brings some news regarding the next two films in the trilogy, Episode VIII and IX.  While many speculated this would happen (including us), it looks like Jj Abrams is only on board for Star Wars: Episode VII.  Reports have come in now that Rian Johnson will be taking over writing and directing duties for the last two films in the trilogy.

Honestly, I thought today would be something of a slow day.  Another week has gone by, and aside from some updates on Harrison Ford's broken leg, and some rumors (that's gone back and forth between refuted and confirmed) fans have been kind of left in the lurch in terms of Star Wars stuff.  Then a bombshell hits, coming from Deadline: »

Breaking: Rian Johnson To Direct Star Wars Episode VIII & IX?

20 June 2014 11:59 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Breaking. We are hearing reports via Deadline that Looper director Rian Johnson is in negotiations to write and direct the eighth and ninth Star Wars movies. The news means that Jj Abrams, currently directing Star Wars Episode VII at Pinewood Studios just outside of London, will move on after bringing that movie to screens in 2015.

Johnson made an impressive debut in 2005 with the indie Brick, which featured Joseph Gordon Levitt before moving on to helm The Brothers Bloom and most recently Looper, which starred Levitt opposite Bruce Willis. He has also directed three episodes of the superb AMC drama Breaking Bad.

Update: /Film report the news that Johnson (kind of) confirmed the news on Twitter by posting the clip below. However, reports from both The Wrap and The Hollywood Reporter state that while Johnson will write and direct Episode VIII he is only writing a treatment for the ninth, but »

While production just began on “Star Wars: Episode VII,” Disney and Lucasfilm are already focusing on Episode VIII. Sources tell Variety that “Looper” director Rian Johnson is in talks to write and direct the next film in the popular series.

Johnson is best known for his sci-fi action pic “Looper” starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis. The pic overperformed at the box office bringing in $176 million worldwide. He also directed several episodes of “Breaking Bad” last season.

Ram Bergman will produce with Johnson.

The Johnson news comes after the company tapped Garreth Edwards and Josh Trank to direct two stand-alone “Star Wars” films.

J.J. Abrams is currently directing the next “Star Wars,” which is filming in London, and sources add that cast and crew were becoming aware that this would probably be the only installment Abrams would be directing.

'Star Wars': Episode VIII to be made by 'Breaking Bad' director Rian Johnson

20 June 2014 11:39 AM, PDT | EW - Inside Movies | See recent EW.com - Inside Movies news »

J.J. Abrams may be kicking off the new Star Wars trilogy, but the series will get a different director for Episode VIII: Rian Johnson, the director of Brick, Looper, and some of the most memorable episodes of Breaking Bad.

Johnson — a longtime friend and collaborator with Joseph Gordon-Levitt – is known for bringing grit and grounded emotion to genre fare, like setting a hardboiled detective story in a high school in the 2005 drama Brick, or the time-travel saga Looper, with Gordon-Levitt as a younger version of Bruce Willis, trying to assassinate his future self.

The director also helmed some of the »
