He acted in Alan Plater's play, "A Smashing Day," at the New Arts Theatre in London, England with Basil Dignam, Barbara Barnett, Michael Blackham, Vyvian Hall, Christine Hargreaves, and Jenny Laird in the cast. John Fernald was director.

His London stage debut was as Ophelia in "Hamlet" at the opening of the Queen's Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue. The production was staged by the Youth Theatre. It was traditional for men to play female roles in Shakespeare's time, and at 15, Bennett's voice hadn't broken yet. In later years he played the title Dane himself in a South African production.
