First cousin of Hollywood actress Olive Sturgess.
Matronly British character actress, on the West End stage from the 1940's. On screen, appeared mostly in television guest spots, best known for her role as Lady Fairfax on the long-running soap Upstairs, Downstairs (1971).
Suffered an embarrassing accident during a 1949 stage performance of "Ann Veronica" at the London Piccadilly Theatre: after losing balance, the tandem bicycle ridden by her and fellow-actress Alexis Frances, went off stage and crashed into the orchestra pit.
