Latest Dw Animation Effort to Become a Costly Domestic Disappointment?

18 July 2013 4:19 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Turbo movie box office: A costly disappointment-in-the-making? DreamWorks Animation / 20th Century Fox’s Turbo debuted on Wednesday at 3,551 North American locations, grossing a barely passable $5.55 million according to figures found at Box Office Mojo. True, Turbo isn’t a sequel like Despicable Me 2 or Monsters University, but the 3D animated feature cost a reported $135 million. Could Turbo be thus considered a domestic box-office flop-in-the-making? Well, that’s much too early to tell, as animated films at times develop sturdy legs — and not only in the U.S. and Canada, but elsewhere as well. (Image: Turbo snail racer.) (Friday, July 19, update: Following a solid Thursday midnight debut, it looks like the domestic weekend box office will belong to the low-budget horror movie The Conjuring. The paragraph below has been slightly amended to reflect that.) Box-office pundits had been expecting Turbo to top the domestic box-office chart this weekend, with approximately $28-30 million, »

'Turbo' (2013) Movie Review

17 July 2013 8:20 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I've had the hardest time trying to come up with something to write about Turbo. I enjoyed it, yet it's a small effort, using similarly themed ideas from the past, giving them something of a new spin and doing so relatively successfully. Yes, as I'm sure many will point out, to a degree it's Cars with snails. I also see Fast and Furious, animated for the young ones and prime to satisfy a large demo. But overall it's safe with a generous amount of laughs, and a plot satisfied with reaching middle-of-the-road status. With ever-so-humble beginnings, the story begins with Turbo (voiced by Ryan Reynolds), a garden snail fond of Formula-1 racing who dreams of competing with the best. His role model is the famous Guy Gagne (voiced by Bill Hader) whom he admires in the glow of a garage television neighboring the garden where he and his fellow gastropods work on a daily basis. »

Amateur footage has been released showing a 'ghost car' emerging from a blanket of foam. The video shows the recent sea foam storm on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. Two police officers and other bystanders are seen getting a shock when a car suddenly appears underneath the foam that had been swept to the shore by a tropical cyclone. Michael Bell captured the footage after taking his sister to the beach to see the foam storm. "It was unbelievable. We walked down there just as they were closing the road," he told news.com.au. > (more) »
