How does Malick's latest effort fit into the filmmaker's oeuvre? Featuring Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain, and Sean Penn, Malick's existential drama The Tree of Life, released two years ago, is the obvious seed stock for To the Wonder. (Pictured above: Olga Kurylenko, Ben Affleck's romantic interest) Those two efforts are twins both thematically and stylistically -- though, admittedly, they are also closely related to his entire oeuvre. From his 1970s' efforts Badlands and Days of Heaven, Malick’s interests have always been expounded upon. Among those is what one could call a “wonder” at all things that have not been created by Man, and therefore likely created by God, besides philosophical ponderings about things that were created by Man, such as disharmony with nature and both external and inner conflicts. The New World, for example, has little if any historical relevance; on the other hand, this 2005 effort features much »

Review: Somebody Up There Likes Me

4 April 2013 12:00 PM, PDT | Slackerwood | See recent Slackerwood news »

I've seen Somebody Up There Likes Me twice now -- once at SXSW 2012 with a lively local-heavy audience, once via screener with no one else but the cat -- and found the movie terribly funny both times. In fact, after I watched it the second time, I restarted the film so I could to see how the beginning tied into the end (it does, so pay attention) ... then had to stop myself from watching it a third time. The movie opens Friday at Violet Crown Cinema and I'm sorely tempted to go.

I liked it a lot, obviously. But I don't know whether you'd like it. Local filmmaker Bob Byington's universe is not for everyone.

Somebody Up There Likes Me is a comedy, but not in a broad sense -- its humor is very specific. I don't mean that it's full of obscure pop-culture references, either, because the movie »

Somebody Up There Likes Me Movie Review

Title: Somebody Up There Likes Me Director: Bob Byington Starring: Keith Poulson, Nick Offerman, Jess Weixler, Kevin Corrigan, Kate Lyn Sheil, Stephanie Hunt, Marshall Bell, Jonathan Togo, Megan Mullally A delightfully deadpan relationship comedy that plays like a cross between something from Quentin Dupieux and Jared and Jerusha Hess, “Somebody Up There Likes Me” is an imaginative paean to world-weary nonchalance. Directed by Bob Byington, this subversive little treat flirts with absurdism but never tips over into hipster posturing in chronicling a bunch of domestic ennui and professional unhappiness that its characters pretty much seem to all shruggingly accept. After listless waiter Max Youngman (Keith Poulson, looking like a cousin  [ Read More ]

Revisiting The X-Files season 1: Fallen Angel

19 February 2013 11:43 PM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Feature Jennifer Cates 20 Feb 2013 - 07:41

Jenny's look back at her pick of The X-Files's first season continues, with episode ten, Fallen Angel...

This review contains spoilers.

1.10 Fallen Angel

A middling episode for the middle of the season ends with a big payoff that leaves the viewer guessing. We also get some more of the creative camera work we see so often in the series. Here it’s a fish eye lens that is depicting the first person (alien?) view of the alien crash victim complete with creepy audio to give each of the scenes a little more suspense.

The episode starts as Deep Throat puts Mulder onto a “toxic waste spill” in Wisconsin, which we know is an alien aircraft crash thanks to the pre-credits intro. We also know we’re dealing with a violent alien when the fish eye lens comes out of the crash to attack a local sheriff. »
