Alphas S1E1 review

25 October 2011 11:26 AM, PDT | Shadowlocked | See recent Shadowlocked news »

Alphas, from Michael Karnow and comic book movie veteran Zak Penn (X-Men 2, Elektra, The Incredible Hulk), is a relatively realistic show about people with superpowers, though given this description, it’s less gritty (at least initially) than you might expect. It’s not like Jason Bourne with superpowers (or Battlestar Galactica, despite the presence of Callum Keith Rennie). And the realism doesn’t stop the show from having some cool special effects.

It’s broadly similar to Warehouse 13 (another SyFy show also scored by Edward Rogers) in tone and visual style, though Alphas’ pilot is better. Since Warehouse 13 was relatively slow to start, but got really good in the second half of Season 1, then hopefully Alphas could be even better, if it shows the same level of improvement. The characters aren’t as good as in Warehouse 13, though it’s early days yet, though most of them are quite good, »

'Alphas' Returns In Season 2 With New Showrunner

9 October 2011 1:31 AM, PDT | AirlockAlpha.com | See recent Airlock Alpha news »

Bruce Miller has done some amazing things with "Eureka," which at one time was Syfy's highest-rated show. The cable channel is not willing to let him go, however, as they have tapped him to take over another up-and-coming series, the second season of "Alphas." The show, from Zak Penn and Michael Karnow, earned a second season in September after posting strong ratings as a lead-out from "Warehouse 13." It was a bit of a surprise hit for Syfy, where some early critics had panned the concept as being too much like X-Men or "Heroes." Instead, the series -- focused on people with special abilities -- seem to find its own audience niche, and impressed both audiences and critics alike. Miller will replace Ira Steven Behr, the former showrunner for "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" whose credits »

‘Alphas’ Mythology Emerges, Upcoming Guest-Stars include Summer Glau, Brent Spiner

26 July 2011 9:10 AM, PDT | BuzzFocus.com | See recent BuzzFocus.com news »

Syfy’s newest hit show, Alphas was greeted with open arms at Comic-Con International this past weekend. Executive Producer and writer Zak Penn (X-Men Last Stand), showrunner Ira Steven Behr (Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek Deep Space Nine) and star David Strathairn (Good Night, and Good Luck) to discuss their show. In their panel, Behr revealed upcoming guest-stars will include Summer Glau (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Firefly), Garret Dillahunt (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Raising Hope), and Brent Spiner (Star Trek: The Next Generation). Penn tried to separate Alphas from the comparisons to the X-Men by saying that “The X-Men weren’t fighting crime, they were protecting themselves.” Since Alphas is more rooted in the real world, part of the motivation of these characters is using their powers to get paid. Penn told me in the press room that hopes that as the series progresses, people will »

Deadline.com is reporting TNT has picked up the Noah Wyle lead alien invasion series Falling Skies for a second season

Doctor Who News site is reporting that Beth Willis, one of the executive producers of Doctor Who, is exiting the series. Her departure comes on the heels of another exec, Piers Wenger, who is departing as well. While nothing can be called strange about these leavings, it does add further rumors of issues the series is having meeting budgets and deadlines. When production begins on season seven, a new team will join series showrunner Steven Moffat.

Former producer/writer/executive producer Ira Steven Behr of (my personal favorite) Star Trek: Deep Space Nine did a two-part interview with the official Star Trek web site. He talks about the rumored goings on between him and Rick Berman, and why it was the time to do a serialized Trek series. Part »

Alphas Deserves its Later Timeslot, Says Executive Producer

Alphas debuts on Space and Syfy on July 11

New sci-fi series Alphas makes its debut on Space and Syfy this month and it sounds like it’s not going to be kid’s stuff. That much was suggested by executive producer Ira Steven Behr when he spoke to reporters about the show last week. Behr was asked how the show compared with Eureka and Warehouse 13, two light-hearted sci-fi series that will also air on Mondays on Syfy.

“We have a lot of humor in our show, but our episodes do tend at times to be darker in their plotlines,” Behr is quoted as saying by The Morton Report. “We’re the 10:00 o’clock show and I think we deserve to be. That said, I do feel that we all share this kind of character-driven humor, and obviously we’re all ensemble shows. So we have similarities and some strong differences. »

Insights on Alphas: Darker than Eureka and Warehouse 13

30 June 2011 4:00 PM, PDT | ScifiMafia | See recent ScifiMafia news »

As we have been reporting, Syfy’s new scripted show Alphas is scheduled to premiere on Monday, July 11 after the mid-season and season premieres of Eureka and Warehouse 13. SciFi Mafia recently attended a Q&A panel with Alphas Executive Producer Ira Steven Behr (The 4400, Crash), and cast members Ryan Cartwright (Bones, Mad Men) and Azita Ghanizada (Psych, NCIS: La) to find out a little bit more about their specific characters and the show in general.

First, a quick reminder from Syfy about the premise of the show:

Alphas is an action-packed thriller from writers Zak Penn (The Avengers, X-Men: The Last Stand) and Michael Karnow.  In the series, five ordinary people are brought together to form one extraordinary team of Alphas — people with the unique power to stretch the capabilities of the human mind giving them superhuman physical and mental abilities.
