Gideon Raff Plans Operation Brothers

26 August 2015 5:01 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Having carved out a successful career on television, co-creating Homeland and Tyrant, Gideon Raff is now setting his sights on getting back to the movies. He's already attached to adapt Alice Laplante's novel Turn Of Mind for Fox, and he's now also sold his treatment for Operation Brothers to the same studio. Raff will write, produce and direct the film, based on the true story of the evacuation of Jewish Ethiopian Civil War refugees from from Sudan to Israel in the late 1970s and early '80s. On the orders of then-Prime Minister Menachem Begin, Mossad set up a secret base in a deserted Sudanese holiday camp, and orchestrated the mass extraction by sea and air. It's Argo meets Exodus, is no doubt the pitch somewhere. Alexandra Milchan (The Wolf Of Wall Street) is producing.Raff was an assistant to Doug Liman on Mr. & Mrs Smith before going on »

‘Tyrant’ Co-Creator Sells Pitch ‘Operation Brothers’ to Fox Searchlight (Exclusive)

26 August 2015 4:04 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

With the second season of his FX drama coming to a strong close, “Tyrant” exec producer and co-creator Gideon Raff is setting his sights on his film slate, having sold the pitch “Operation Brothers” to Fox Searchlight.

Sources tell Variety that Raff will write, produce and direct the pic based on the 1981 rescue of Ethiopian Jews to Israel. The top-secret story begins in 1977, when Israel’s Mossad spy agency was given an assignment far different from its usual cloak-and-dagger activities. It was ordered by then-Prime Minister Menachem Begin to rescue thousands of Ethiopian Jewish refugees in Sudan and deliver them to the Jewish state. No stranger to action in enemy countries, the agency established a covert forward base in a deserted holiday village in Sudan and deployed a handful of operatives to launch and oversee the exodus of the refugees to the Promised Land, by sea and by air, in the early 1980s. »
