Almost everyone knows what it’s like, the concept of Dinner with the Parents, but Amazon Freevee is taking the idea and raising it a few notches for this chaotically hilarious new comedy arriving April 18. In an exclusive first look at the series, the trailer, above, offers a glimpse into the Friday night gatherings of the closely-knit Langer family made up of mom Jane (Michaela Watkins), dad Harvey (Dan Bakkedahl), nana Rose (Carol Kane), and sons David (Henry Hall) and Gregg (Daniel Thrasher). “This show is so much fun to make because we get to push the limits of what a family comedy can be — how flawed the characters, how fast the pace, how far things escalate,” series showrunner and executive producer Jon Beckerman tells TV Insider. “We’re hoping that, when people watch it, they’ll think, ‘This family is bonkers. But I wish it was mine.'” As...

Michaela Watkins and Veep alum Dan Bakkedahl will lead the cast of Amazon Freevee’s series Dinner with the Parents, a remake of the long-running British comedy Friday Night Dinner, which is being produced by CBS Studios and Big Talk.
In the single-camera Dinner with the Parents, which has a straight-to-series order, two brothers in their 20s go to their mom (Watkins) and dad’s (Bakkedahl) for dinner each week and somehow get through it without actually, physically, dying of embarrassment.
Bakkedahl plays the dad, Harvey Langer, a “dad joke” in human form. He a suburban dentist trying to fend off a midlife crisis by wearing aloha shirts and playing in a garage band called the Spin Dentists. Desperate for attention, Harvey finds a way to make every Friday night about him.

Kenton Allen, CEO of London-based outfit Big Talk Productions, has plenty to be pleased about. For the next two weeks, the company he has headed for over a decade will be dominating the Monday night primetime slot on BBC One in the U.K. First, at 8:30 p.m., with “The Goes Wrong Show,” and then at 9 p.m. with “The Outlaws,” about a group of small-time convicts completing community service together and which stars Christopher Walken in his first British television role.
“That doesn’t happen every day,” Allen tells Variety. “That’s quite a big thing for us to have an hour and a half of primetime on the nation’s biggest Psb.”
Allen is ostensibly here to talk about “The Outlaws,” which is written by and stars Stephen Merchant (“Jojo Rabbit”) alongside Walken and “Poldark’s” Eleanor Tomlinson, but in a wide-ranging conversation is happy to discuss everything from the U.

The network has given orders to two more projects: comedy Adam & Eve, from Ed co-creator Jon Beckerman, and drama neXt from 24: Legacy creator Manny Coto and the duo of John Requa and Glenn Ficarra (This Is Us).
The two orders follow on the heels of green lights for two other dramas, cop show Deputy and an untitled drama set at a wedding from Californication's Tom Kapinos. Editor’s Note: There are so many different paths to becoming a movie director, but a career in late night isn’t one of the more common ones. Rob Burnett spent 30 years working for David Letterman, rising from intern to executive producer, before directing Paul Rudd and Selena Gomez in the upcoming Netflix release “The Fundamentals of Caring.” We asked the writer/director what lessons he took from “The Late Show” and how did it prepare him for being a filmmaker. What we got was the following essay, which is a great insight into the mindset it takes to direct a feature film.

Mr. Ed was a horse, and he ended up more reputable than Ed Stevens, the titular character in NBC’s Ed. Created by Jon Beckerman and Rob Burnett, this 2000-2004 series is criminally underrated and deserves more attention than it’s gotten, and is one of the most regretfully forgotten television shows of all time.
Ed‘s premise is a simple one. The lead character is Ed, of course, who travels back to his home town following his divorce from an unfaithful wife. Originally, his plan was only to visit his hometown of Stuckyville, but following a run-in with a girl he loved in high school, Ed decides to move back home permanently. What follows is a wonderful story that may seem somewhat plain by today’s television standards. Ed is a good person and he works as a lawyer in his home town helping people and facing the occasional moral dilemma.

Justin Long is in New York this week for the Tribeca Film Festival to promote his new romantic comedy, "A Case Of You," which Long co-wrote with his brother Christian and actor Keir O'Donnell. When we met in the basement of a New York City Hilton to discuss the new film however, our conversation started with some small talk -- which is often awkward. In this case, instead of saying something like "I like your shirt," I brought up my former Movieline colleague, film critic-turned-author Michelle Orange.
Back in September of 2010, Orange wrote a negative review of Long's comedy "Going the Distance," which Long then recited during a taping of "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon." The conflict went viral, but was settled in November of that year after Orange explained her review in a post for The Rumpus. Still, it's clear all that back-and-forth made an impact on Long; my...

In the coming-of-age tale We Made This Movie, five high-school seniors envision a Diy blockbuster as their ticket to the big time. All they need to do is get their homemade version of Jackass to actor Bill Pullman, who plays a fictionalized version of himself who grew up in the same depressed town. “We needed kind of the perfect celebrity for this role,” says director Rob Burnett, who is also the executive producer of The Late Show With David Letterman. “As talented an actor as Bill truly is, I’m not sure that he himself could get a movie made.

Rock great Mick Jagger is in negotiations to appear in ABC's untitled Burnett/Beckerman comedy pilot, sources said. The Donal Logue-starring project, from Touchstone Television, revolves around a group of blue-collar guys in New York who decide to rob a celebrity (Jagger). Originally, the project was shopped around with the cheeky title I Want to Rob Jeff Goldblum, but Jeff Goldblum, who has his own pilot at NBC, was never attached. After the script was picked up to pilot in December, the show's creators, Rob Burnett and Jon Beckerman, zeroed in on Jagger as the celebrity at the center of the show. Jagger would only appear in a few scenes, and his name is not expected to be in the title of the single-camera project, sources said. But he is crucial to the plot line as the target of the planned robbery and is mentioned numerous times in the scenes that already have been filmed. DVDs with the taped pilot sans Jagger's scenes already have started floating around. If the pilot is picked up to series, Jagger would continue to appear as the plot to rob him develops. With the deal for the Burnett/Beckerman project, Jagger is poised to join another British rock star, Elton John, in the ABC/Touchstone comedy fold this season. John executive produces the single-camera half-hour pilot Him and Us. Earlier this week, Jagger and The Rolling Stones wrapped the spring leg of their world tour supporting the 2005 album A Bigger Bang, which covered North and South America, Japan, China, Australia and New Zealand. The European portion of the tour begins next month.
