'The Deuce' Recap: Skin in the Game

17 September 2017 7:00 PM, PDT | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

As a title for this week's episode of The Deuce, "Show and Prove" is a tough one to beat. Within its dirty world of 1971 Times Square, the phrase refers to the NYPD's demand for sex workers to produce paperwork proving they've already been arrested within the past 48 hours. This allows them a reprieve from the current night's "ho patrol" bust – a crime-stopping tactic so familiar that the police and prostitutes all order Chinese takeout and eat it in the precinct house's courtyard together.

But it's also an apt description of »

The Deuce Season 1 Review

10 September 2017 10:13 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

The entire first season was provided prior to broadcast.

“It’s the Deuce” – Vincent Martino

The sensory disorienting cesspool that is 1970s Manhattan, teeming with merciless pimps, amoral patrolmen, and entrepreneurial mafiosi, serves as the backdrop for David Simon’s engrossing, titillating HBO drama The Deuce. Co-created with George Pelecanos, who worked alongside Simon on The Wire and Treme, the eight-episode first season documents the evolution of the porn industry, the etiquette of prostitution, and the institutional racketeering propelling and consolidating them.

Breaking the skin is Vincent Martino (James Franco) and his twin brother Frankie (also Franco). A bartender of unparalleled trustworthiness, apart from deserting his flirtatious wife (Zoe Kazan) and children, Vincent bares the brunt of his kin’s gambling addiction and hotheaded demeanour. Incidentally, Frankie’s excessive debt to Rudy Pipilo (Michael Rispoli) lands Vincent a cushy managerial position at the thug’s newest bar, eventually allowing him »

Fall TV Preview: The 25 Most Anticipated New Shows of 2017

5 September 2017 10:52 AM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

The idea of a “fall TV season” feels particularly antiquated in 2017, as two of the year’s buzziest series (“Game of Thrones” and “Twin Peaks”) have already wrapped for the year. Fall may even be a bit of an afterthought now compared to spring, as networks aim to catch Emmy voters with prestige TV premieres when campaign season gets underway.

And yet, there’s nearly 70 years of tradition with the fall TV season. It’s when Nielsen still resets the calendar for the new TV year; when blue chip advertisers like the automotive sector roll out their own new wares; football season returns (don’t discount that huge impact on TV schedules); and the weather gets chilly, which conceivably means more viewers watching TV indoors.

This year, they’ll find a lot of familiar titles on broadcast TV, including the return of NBC’s “Will & Grace”; a prequel to “The Big Bang Theory, »

‘The Deuce’ Creator David Simon: Porn Drama Isn’t ’Trafficking in Misogynistic Imagery or Objectification’

The Deuce” producers and stars want to draw a line about the series: It’s about porn, but is not porn itself.

That means that all of the problems associated with porn — the misogyny, the abuse, the objectification – are featured on “The Deuce” as part of the exploration of the topic, not for gratuitous storytelling.

“You portray it by being direct,” co-creator David Simon told reporters Wednesday at the Television Critics Association press tour. “It would be a mistake to look at this and think that we are in any way trafficking in misogynistic imagery or objectification as one of the currencies driving the show. That’s what the show is about. I’m not sure how you make the show and avert your eyes and clean it up.”

The Deuce,” the HBO drama from “The Wire” and “Treme” vets George Pelecanos and David Simon, transports viewers back to Times Square in all its grungy, seedy, early 1970s glory.

The show toplined by Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Franco revolves around a colorful clutch of hookers, pimps, bartenders, cops and sundry hustlers trying to make a living on the trash-ridden streets of New York. “Deuce” ultimately explores the growth of the modern pornography industry (although the first episode does not delve into the X-rated film biz). The premiere screening of “Deuce’s” pilot was the kickoff event for the Split Screens Festival, which runs through June 8 at IFC Center.

Look for returning characters to dominate the category, with last year’s winner Hank Azaria likely to repeat his nom for his role as disgraced FBI Agent Ed Cochran in “Ray Donovan.” Beau Bridges should land his third consecutive nod for “Masters of Sex.” Mark Margolis was last nominated for playing Hector Salamanca on “Breaking Bad” in 2012, and that was with a minimum of dialogue, so he has a good shot for bringing a younger but no less terrifying Hector to “Better Call Saul.” Ben Mendelsohn previously won in the supporting category for “Bloodline” but this year he’s eligible as a guest star. year. And both Dylan Baker and Matthew Perry could earn nods for bringing their characters from “The Good Wife” to its spinoff “The Good Fight.”

The freshman series “This Is Us” could be a powerhouse, with turns from Denis O’Hare, Brian Tyree Henry, Jermel Nakia and Gerald McRaney. But »
