‘Truth’: Movie Reignites Heated Debate Over ‘60 Minutes II’ Scandal

6 October 2015 10:52 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Truth” is revisiting a painful chapter for CBS News. The upcoming movie, starring Cate Blanchett as producer Mary Mapes and Robert Redford as Dan Rather, is an unwelcome reminder of past mistakes for several people who lived through the saga of the 2004 “60 Minutes II” report on President George W. Bush’s time in the Texas Air National Guard.

Some who are depicted in the controversial film, which is based on Mapes’ 2005 book “Truth and Duty: The Press, the President and the Privilege of Power,” are critical of the conclusions drawn by the veteran investigative journalist.

They were hopeful that the picture, which debuts in theaters on Oct. 16, would come and go quickly in limited release. But Blanchett is generating Oscar buzz as a best actress contender for her tour de force performance as the hard-charging producer swept up in a firestorm of partisan politics and media scrutiny of her work. »

First Look: Sony Classics Dates 'Truth' in Oscary October Slot

1 August 2015 10:33 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Just the other day a reader alerted me to a report at BoxOffice.com that Sony Classics had dated James Vanderbilt's Truth for an Oct. 16 release. It seemed odd in that a) the film hadn't been announced for either Venice or Toronto; b) we hadn't seen a trailer or promotional still; c) Sony Classics didn't have the film even listed on their press site; and d) one would expect all these things given the awards buzz surrounding star Cate Blanchett in the role of Mary Mapes. As it turns out, the report was accurate, the film will arrive in October and we also have the first look at Blanchett and Robert Redford in the upcoming film. Of course, there's a bit of decision-making to be had when it comes to Blanchett as she is also looked at as a top contender for Best Actress for her role in Carol. »

Win Passes To The Advance Screening of Russell Crowe’s The Water Diviner in St. Louis

13 April 2015 8:44 AM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Wamg has your free passes to the advance screening of Warner Bros. Pictures’ The Water Diviner.

Academy Award winner Russell Crowe (Gladiator) makes his directorial debut on The Water Diviner, an epic and inspiring tale of one man’s life-changing journey of discovery.

Crowe also stars in the film as Australian farmer Joshua Connor, who, in 1919, goes in search of his three missing sons, last known to have fought against the Turks in the bloody Battle of Gallipoli. Arriving in Istanbul, he is thrust into a vastly different world, where he encounters others who have suffered their own losses in the conflict: Ayshe (Olga Kurylenko), a strikingly beautiful but guarded hotelier raising a child alone; her young, spirited son, Orhan (Dylan Georgiades), who finds a friend in Connor; and Major Hasan (Yilmaz Erdoğan), a Turkish officer who fought against Connor’s boys and who may be this father’s only hope. »

The Water Diviner review: Russell Crowe's impressive directorial debut

2 April 2015 1:30 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Director: Russell Crowe; Screenwriters: Andrew Knight, Andrew Anastasios; Starring: Russell Crowe, Jai Courtney, Olga Kurylenko, Isabel Lucas; Running time: 111 mins; Certificate: 15

Coinciding with the centenary of the Battle of the Gallipoli, where 8,709 Australians were killed during the First World War, The Water Diviner comes as a reminder that this was a tragedy on both sides. Russell Crowe boldly chooses this subject to make his feature directorial debut - picking up where Peter Weir left off with Gallipoli (1981) - and also stars as a father looking for his sons' remains after the guns are laid down in Turkey. His case isn't watertight, but he angles for tear-jerking drama and delivers.

Realism takes second place to mysticism and the foreword, claiming this story to be based on real events, is a leap given that the writers were inspired by just a single line in a letter penned by Lt-Colonel Cyril Hughes (here »

New Trailer For Russell Crowe’s Directorial Debut The Water Diviner

13 February 2015 10:28 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Warner Bros. has unveiled an all-new trailer for Russell Crowe’s passion project and directorial debut, The Water Diviner.

Set during the fallout of World War I, the Australian drama stars Crowe himself as Joshua Connor, a grieving father who sets forth to Turkey in order to locate the whereabouts of his three missing sons, who were last known to have fought within the infamous Gallipoli campaign of 1915. Taking place on the  Gallipoli peninsula, the battle is widely considered to be one of the most defining moment in Turkish history.

But for Crowe’s protagonist, the conflict will underpin a much more personal, emotionally harrowing journey, as the footage above attests. Joining the Oscar-winner for the genre epic are Olga Kurylenko, Yilmaz Erdogan, Cem Yilmaz, Jai Courtney, Steve Bastoni, Isabel Lucas, Ryan Corr, Dan Wyllie, Damon Herriman, Jacqueline McKenzie, Michael Dorman, Megan Gale, and Dylan Georgiades.
