‘Hacksaw Ridge,’ ‘La La Land,’ ‘Moana’ Win Mpse Golden Reel Awards
Mel Gibson’s “Hacksaw Ridge” earned the top two sound editing awards Sunday night at the 64th Mpse Golden Reel Awards, while Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land” and Disney’s “Moana” took musical and animation honors.

The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and The Silk Road Ensemble” and “Warcraft: The Beginning” won for documentary and score.

Hacksaw Ridge” now becomes the favorite to beat “La La Land” in the Oscar battle.

TV winners included “Westworld” (for both long form and short form FX/Foley), “The Night of” “Part 1 The Beach,” “Penny Dreadful III” “Ebb Tide,” “Stranger Things,” and “The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let’s Do the Time Warp Again,” and “Mozart in the Jungle.”

The Filmmaker and Career Achievement Awards were presented to Guillermo del Toro and Harry Cohen.

Mel Gibson’s World War II drama “Hacksaw Ridge” claimed top honors at the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ (Mpse) 64th annual Golden Reel Awards Sunday night. The film won in both the FX/Foley and Dialogue/Adr categories. “La La Land” won in the musical field.

Awards also went to “Warcraft: The Beginning” and “Moana,” among others.

On the television side, “Westworld” won prizes in both the short form and long form categories. “Penny Dreadful,” “The Night Of” and “The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let’s Do the Time Warp Again” were also recognized.

Guillermo del Toro received the organization’s Filmmaker Award, while sound editor Harry Cohen (“Kill Bill,” “Blood Diamond,” “Lone Survivor”) accepted a career achievement honor.

Hacksaw Ridge” and “La La Land” are Oscar-nominated for best sound editing this year along with “Arrival,” “Hacksaw Ridge” and “Sully.”

Black Sails,” “Fargo” and “Cartel Land” won sound editing Emmys last year.

‘Cyborg’ is as well an oiled machine as cheap, B-movies get

In the future, a dangerous plague wipes out much of humanity, civilization crumbling away with it. Enter the pirates, gangs that reap barbaric pleasure out of rape and pillage. One such faction is led by the Goliath-like figure of Fender (Vincent Klyn), a psychotic individual seeking to intercept a female cyborg, Pearl (Dayle Haddon), traversing the United States to Atlanta and carrying the secret medicinal knowledge that will help the country’s few remaining doctors determine a cure to the deadly virus. Dayle cannot make the journey alone, requiring the help of tracker Gibson (Jean-Claude Van Damme) a man wrestling with his own demons and wanting to settle a score with the nefarious Fender.

Cyborg (1988): Director’s Cut: Jean-Claude Van Damme, Albert Pyun Release

The Director’s Cut of Albert Pyun‘s Cyborg (1988) starring Jean-Claude Van Damme has been released. “Albert Pyun’s longtime composer found the director’s last cut of Cyborg before he left the picture after disputes with Cannon, Jean Claude Van Damme and producer Sheldon Lettichand.” Also starring Deborah Richter, Vincent Klyn, Dayle Haddon, Ralf Möller, and Alex Daniels, we’ve learned the new version of the film is the cut before it had to be trimmed to get an R rating. I bet one of extended scenes is the decapitation scene at the beginning of the film and the surgery scene on Pearl (Dayle Haddon).

The copy found is a telecine of the actual workprint in widescreen dated October 8, 1988. It’s only got a temp mix stereo track, but includes the original, never heard rock score by Tony Riparetti and Jim Saad which was eventually replaced by Kevin Bassinson’s score.

Updated: A darker, unrated director's cut of Cyborg has been found... and it's available!

[Update: The first 3:40 second of the Cyborg "Renegade" director's cut has been passed to us by Albert Pyun. This is definitely rough stuff, put together for fans so if don't expect Blu-ray quality. That being said, if you're the kind of person who is fascinated by how films are put together and how they can change, this cut will be a uncommon look back at the history of a film.]

Exclusive: John Dickson Knows the Score For 'Burn Notice'

Tonight sees the summer finale of USA Network's Burn Notice on USA at 9/8C. The action-packed espionage series debuted on the channel (a division of NBC Universal) in 2007. It was part of the network's shift away from sci-fi shows that included The Dead Zone and The 4400 (I still haven't forgiven them for canceling that). Since then Burn Notice has grown in popularity and scope and earlier this year it was renewed for a fifth and a sixth season.

Like several of USA's shows, Burn Notice has won over critics and audiences with its mix of thrills, drama and offbeat humor. That is the sort of thing that scriptwriters, directors and cast are usually credited with, and rightly so.
