I think the film's [Brief Encounter] appeal is partly to do with the music. It was [director] David Lean's idea to have the Rachmaninov [Piano Concerto No.2].
She was cast for Brief Encounter
(1945) at age 18 after David Lean and Noel Coward saw her on the West End stage during WWII. During the war she became well known for playing children and young people because she was small for her age.
