On this day in history as it relates to the movies...

Corey Stoll as Hemingway

1892 Maria Falconetti is born. Delivers one of the best performances ever captured on film thirty-six years later in The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928)

1899 Famous author and real 'character' Ernest Hemingway is born. In addition to his work being made into films and TV miniseries he frequently pops up as a character in cinema played by everyone from Chris O'Donnell (In Love and War) to Corey Stoll (Midnight in Paris - robbed of an Oscar nod though we honored him here) and now Dominic West (Genius) ...and that's not even the half of it.

1922 Don Knotts is born. Mugs it up in 70+ film and TV projects including Three's Company, The Apple Dumpling Gang, and The Andy Griffith Show - 5 Emmy wins for Supporting Actor thereafter until his death in 2006

Nsfw Trailer For White Girl Takes A Deep Dive Into NYC’s Underbelly

13 July 2016 8:47 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Morgan Saylor takes a deep dive into NYC’s underbelly in the shocking, sexy and decidedly Nsfw trailer for Elizabeth Wood’s directorial debut, White Girl.

Wood, who recently came attached to long-gestating superhero film Captain Marvel, premiered her first feature film at Sundance earlier this year, and though it didn’t take home any awards, the review accolades sprinkled across today’s inaugural trailer are enough to pique our curiosity.

From a drug-induced nightmare to a stylish, cutting-edge portrayal of NYC, the early consensus for Wood’s film runs the gamut, and it’ll be fascinating to see how it fares with the moviegoing masses later this year.

The cross section between New York’s mean streets and its gentrified alcoves makes for potent social satire in Elizabeth Wood’s tough and exhilarating debut. Equipped with platinum blonde hair and a winning smile, college girl Leah (Morgan Saylor) seeks out pleasure in any form. »

First Red Band Trailer for Indie New York City Drug Drama 'White Girl'

12 July 2016 1:20 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

FilmRise has debuted a new trailer for an indie called White Girl, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this year, the first feature from director Elizabeth Wood. In the film, Morgan Saylor stars as a "white girl" who falls for a guy and desperately tries to keep him in her life. The cast includes Brian Marc, Justin Bartha, Adrian Martinez, India Menuez, Anthony Ramos and Chris Noth. This trailer is red band because it shows how wild this film is - tons of drug use, lots of sex in a story about a young woman trying to figure out who she is. I didn't hear many positive things about this, only that there's lots of drugs. Here's the first official red band trailer for Elizabeth Wood's White Girl, direct from YouTube: Summer, New York City. A Drug-Fueled Downward Spiral Begins in Red Band Trailer For ‘White Girl’

12 July 2016 10:01 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Premiering at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year was White Girl, the debut feature from writer-director Elizabeth Wood. Led by Morgan Saylor (Homeland), the drama depicts the downward spiral of a girl who recently moved to New York City, getting caught in a torrid mix of love and drugs. The first trailer has now arrived ahead of a fall release and it looks to be a vividly captured drama, and perhaps would make a strong double feature with last year’s Heaven Knows What.

We said in our Sundance review, “White Girl is a more than simple voyeurism, watching a pretty junky’s downfall as she does things the patriarchy would loudly object to. The lessons along the way are not quite learned as Leah adapts to street life using her sexuality and drug stash to get herself in and out of trouble. White Girl presents a bleak picture even »

The Cooper Barrett's Guide to Surviving Life TV show on Fox has been officially cancelled after its first and only season. This comes as a shock to no one who has been following the low-rated freshman comedy series. Fox previously demoted the show out of primetime, then wiped it completely from the schedule during May sweeps, replacing it with reruns of The Simpsons.

There is no word from Deadline, on whether Fox will burn off the remaining episodes of Cooper Barrett's Guide to Surviving Life, but that seems unlikely. Thirteen episodes have been produced. “How to Survive Your Parents’ Visit,” guest starring Alan Ruck, Jane Kaczmarek, and »

‘Holy Rollers’ Director Kevin Asch Boards Crime Drama ‘Zealous’

27 April 2016 2:29 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Holy Rollers” director Kevin Asch is on board to helm Israeli crime drama “Zealous,” Variety has learned exclusively.

Asch will re-team with “Holy Rollers” actor/producer Danny A. Abeckaser on “Zealous,” which will be set in New York City with shooting starting in the fall.

The story, written by Asch, Abeckaser and Jon Carlo, centers on an Israeli ex-con with a violent past who joins a burgeoning Israeli crime syndicate in Brooklyn amidst a brutal turf war with the Russian mob. Abeckaser will star and produce.

“I was instantly drawn to the material of the film,” Asch said. “Danny and I are fascinated with exploring cultural components in classic crime dramas. The challenge as a director is to not let the trappings of the genre confine the narrative, but rather, to create flawed characters with souls, who provide a deliberate voice and direction to our story.

Though a cancellation has not been made official, “Cooper Barrett’s Guide to Surviving Life” is nearing its end with recent changes on Fox’s schedule, Variety has learned.

While Fox has declined to comment on the fate of “Cooper Barrett,” it’s crunch time for a number of bubble shows as the Upfronts approach in May.
