21 August 2012 7:47 AM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

"The Hunger Games" helmer Gary Ross has finally locked down his next directing vehicle - "Peter And The Starcatchers" for Disney Pictures says Deadline.

The project is adaptation of the 2004 fantasy novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, which itself was recently turned into a multi-Tony winning musical. Jesse Wigutow is adapting the script with the studio currently waiting on a new draft to be delivered in October.

A prequel of a kind to J.M. Barrie's "Peter Pan", the story follows a young Peter who befriends Molly, a shipmate he meets on the Never Land ship headed toward King Zarboff.

Molly tells Peter of a mysterious trunk filled with magical starstuff that must remain out of the hands of the pirate Black Stache (who will lose his hand and become Captain Hook). Peter and Molly lead an effort to recover the trunk.

Though not yet budgeted, Ross hopes to »

Stephen King's all-author rock band plays swan song on 'The Late Late Show' -- Exclusive Video

Every so often since 1992, an all-star crew of writers — which has included Stephen King, Dave Barry, Amy Tan, Barbara Kingsolver, Scott Turow and Simpsons creator Matt Groening — have stepped away from their laptops and notepads to play in an all-author band called The Rock Bottom Remainders. By their own admission, the Remainders have never been what you’d call great. “We’re a novelty, like a dog that can dance,” Barry recently told EW. (Bruce Springsteen once put it to them this way: “Don’t get any better or you’ll just be another lousy garage band.”) But being great »

Gary Ross To Direct Peter And The Starcatchers

18 July 2012 12:30 PM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

The bed he made with The Hunger Games isn’t even cold yet, but that hasn’t stopped director Gary Ross from taking on another adaptation. Ross is to take on Peter And The Starcatchers, a prequel to Peter Pan written by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson.

The book was published by Hyperion Books, a subsidiary of Disney in 2004 and they keep hold of this version that will be written by Jesse Wigutow. Gary Ross turned down the opportunity to direct The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire, and it looks as though Hollywood is his metaphorical oyster after that box-office hit.

'Hunger Games' Director May Helm 'Peter Pan' Prequel 'Peter and the Starcatchers'

While Gary Ross won’t be returning to direct the The Hunger Games sequel, don’t feel too bad for the filmmaker – he’s in talks to take on another big project that should keep him busy. THR reports that Ross is currently having discussions with Disney about helming an adaptation of Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson’s novel Peter and the Starcatchers, which is a prequel of sorts to the much-loved Peter Pan. The novel has already been adapted for stage – it began an off-Broadway run, then moved on to the big stage before collecting five Tony Awards this year. A jump to the big screen seems like the next logical step. The story focuses on a young Peter, who forms a friendship with a girl named Molly he meets on the Neverland ship bound for...

When Gary Ross unexpectedly turned down the opportunity to direct The Hunger Games sequel Cathching Fire, many in the industry thought he was nuts.  Perhaps he is, but at least it appears he did have something else he was interested in.  According to THR, Ross is in serious negotiations to helm Disney’s Peter and the Starcatchers, a prequel story of Peter Pan.  It will be based on the same-name novel written by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson that was published in 2004 by Disney’s Hyperion Books. »

Gary Ross In Talks For Disney's 'Peter And The Starcatchers'

18 July 2012 10:27 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

It seems like Gary Ross might have found that different project he wanted to pursue that caused him to turn down a directing gig on "Catching Fire."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "The Hunger Games" director is in talks to trade in Panem for Neverland. He is reportedly negotiating to direct Disney's upcoming adaptation of Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson's children's novel "Peter and the Starcatchers," which serves as a prequel of sorts to "Peter Pan."

Ross has never been a director to prefer helming children's stories over adult ones, so there must be something very special (or very profitable) drawing him towards "Peter and the Starcatchers." "The Hunger Games" must have been a good way to prep him for the story, though this Disney project likely won't be nearly as gritty and violent. Ross's previous two films, "Seabiscuit" and "Pleasantville," also aren't great examples of the tone required »

Gary Ross is Developing Peter Pan Prequel Peter and the Starcatchers

Looks like former “Hunger Games” director Gary Ross has found his new muse — Peter Pan. The director, who bowed out of directing the sequel because he didn’t feel as if he had enough time, has signed on to develop the book “Peter and the Starcatchers” as a directing vehicle for himself. “Starcatchers” is said to be a “prequel of sorts” for the Peter Pan stories. Based on the children’s novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, “Peter and the Starcatchers” centers around “a young Peter who befriends Molly, a shipmate he meets on the Never Land ship headed toward King Zarboff. Molly tells Peter of a mysterious trunk filled with magical starstuff that must remain out of the hands of the pirate Black Stache (who will lose his hand and become Captain Hook). Gary Ross to Direct Peter Pan Prequel

18 July 2012 7:42 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

With Gary Ross turning down the opportunity to direct The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire a couple of months ago, you had to assume there was probably something even bigger on the horizon for him. Although it's hard to imagine many projects that could be bigger than the sequel to a $680 million blockbuster based on a series of bestselling books, it appears that he may be trading one bestselling book for another. According to THR, Ross is now in talks to direct Peter and the Starcatchers for Disney, a fantasy adventure film that is a prequel to Peter Pan. That's right, we're getting yet another live action reboot of a popular children's story... this is sounding awfully familiar. Peter and the Starcatchers is based on the novel written by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson and published in 2004 by Disney's Hyperion Books. It creates a backstory for Peter Pan, serving as a prequel to J. »

Gary Ross Circles ‘Peter Pan’ Prequel, ‘Peter and the Starcatchers’

18 July 2012 7:24 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Disney is developing Peter and the Starcatchers, a film adaptation of the popular 2004 children’s fantasy adventure novel that’s already been turned into a Tony-winning stage production.

The book (co-written by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson) is a standalone Peter Pan tale that takes place prior to the events of J.M. Barrie’s famous story about the boy who never grew up. Hence, it’s considered a Peter Pan prequel, by default.

THR reports that four-time Oscar-nominee Gary Ross has entered talks to helm Peter and the Starcatchers, where he would work from an initial script draft penned by Jesse Wigutow (who’s also writing the upcoming Crow reboot). It’s one of a few projects competing to become Ross’ directorial followup to his mega-successful Hunger Games adaptation – the other being the historical fiction/adventure ...
