Isobel Barnett was born on June 30, 1918 in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland as Isobel Morag Marshall. She was married to Geoffrey Barnett. She died on October 20, 1980 in Cossington, Leicestershire, England.

A doctor and magistrate, in 1980 she was convicted of stealing one food can worth about $1 - a curious act in view of her undoubted wealth. She committed suicide because of what she saw as "the social shame".
For many years she was a star panellist on BBC TV's version of "What's My Line".
A qualified doctor, she chaired the Royal College of Nursing's 1978 convention.
In 1996 a variety of the plant Liliaceae Hosta was named after her. A fuchsia variety is also named for her.
She became Lady Barnett after her husband was knighted for political and public services to the city of Leicester in 1953.
She had one son, Alastair, born in 1944.
