The Purge 2 Moves Forward at Universal Pictures

11 June 2013 10:42 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Following a very successful opening weekend at the box office, Universal Pictures is moving forward with a sequel to The Purge. Jason Blum is returning to produce the follow-up, although no cast members have been confirmed.

The sequel has already gotten conditional approval for a $2.25 million tax credit through California's Film and Television Tax Credit program. However, in order to secure this credit, shooting must begin by the end of this year, at the latest, and the production must meet several other requirements.

The Purge starred Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey as parents in a gated community who try to survive the annual event known as The Purge, where all crime is legal for a 12-hour period. James DeMonaco wrote and directed this thriller, but it isn't known if he will return to the helm.

Exclusive: Ethan Hawke Talks The Purge

10 June 2013 9:52 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

As we reported yesterday, Universal Pictures' The Purge is a hit with audiences at the box office, taking in an impressive $36.3 million in its opening weekend. A big part of this success is star Ethan Hawke and producer Jason Blum, who teamed up last year for the horror film Sinister. Ethan Hawke plays James Sandin in The Purge, a father and husband whose world is upended when criminals invade his gated community during the one night out of the year that every crime is fully legal. Todd Gilchrist sat down with the star and producer recently, and you can see what they both had to say in our exclusive video interview.

Title: The Purge Directed By: James DeMonaco Starring: Ethan Hawke, Lena Headey, Adelaide Kane, Max Burkholder, Edwin Hodge, Rhys Wakefield, Arija Bareikis The year is 2022 and the country’s crime rate is at an all time low thanks to an event known as The Purge. From 7pm on March 21st to 7am on March 22nd, all crime is legal. There’s no police, fire departments, or emergency medical services. For a 12-hour stretch you’re on your own and it’s up to you whether you want to lay low and hide or arm up and take advantage of the purpose of the event, to use it as a catharsis. “The Purge” focuses  [ Read More ]

Film Review: ‘The Purge’

3 June 2013 2:14 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

That old horror-movie standard, a homestead besieged by psychos, gets remixed with a bit of Occupy-era class-conflict satire in the disappointing future-set thriller “The Purge.” Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey are interestingly cast, slightly against type, as a smug couple defending their family against murderous intruders on the one night of the year when any crime, even murder, gets a free pass. But while writer-helmer James DeMonaco’s scenario echoes the fiction of J.G. Ballard and even “The Hunger Games,” the film’s thudding shocks and predictability dull its edge. “Purge” took a not-so cathartic $1.5 million over the weekend in Blighty; it looks to do proportionally modest biz when it opens Stateside on Friday.

It’s the year 2022, and some very wacky regime with a religious agenda (given how often the authorities mention God) has taken control of America. Starting on March 22, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., anyone can »
