Six Feet Under: HBO Marks Anniversary with Complete Series Marathon

HBO is marking the 15th anniversary of the Six Feet Under TV show premiere, with a marathon of the entire run of the hit drama series on HBO2. All 63 episodes will air back-to-back starting tonight, Thursday, June 2 at 11:00pm Et/Pt. The marathon concludes Sunday, June 5 at 12:20pm, with the Six Feet Under TV series finale, "Everyone's Waiting."

A darkly comedic, surreal, family drama series from Alan Ball, Six Feet Under premiered June 3, 2001 and ran for 63 episodes, over the course of five seasons. The critically acclaimed Six Feet Under TV series finale aired August 21, 2005. The Six Feet Under cast includes: Peter Krause, Michael C. Hall, Frances Conroy, Lauren Ambrose, Freddy Rodriguez, Mathew St. Patrick, and Rachel Griffiths. Summer TV Preview: Cable Takes Advantage of Broadcast’s Slow Period

Even in this era of too much TV, summer remains a slow period. Though broadcasters are no longer content to run wall-to-wall reruns from June through August, they still save their top guns for fall and midseason. That leaves an opening for cable. Channels looking to make noise with original efforts can do so in the hottest months without going head-to-head with broadcast’s biggest shows. This summer, a handful of networks are looking to take advantage of that opportunity.

Media mogul takes role as the daughter of Baltimore woman who unwittingly contributed to vital medical research

Oprah Winfrey is to take on a rare acting role in a new film about Henrietta Lacks, a woman whose cells became instrumental in the field of medical research.

According to Deadline, the media mogul will headline The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, a film for HBO that she will also executive produce. Winfrey has teamed up with Six Feet Under creator Alan Ball, and George C Wolfe, best known for his stage work, who will write and direct.

Oprah Winfrey will star in “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” which has been greenlit by HBO Films.

The premium cabler made the announcement on Monday.

Based on Rebecca Skloot’s best-seller, Winfrey will also serve as an exec producer on the film, along with Alan BallPeter Macdissi, Carla Gardini and Lydia Dean Pilcher. Skloot will serve as a co-exec producer. George C. Wolfe will direct and wrote the screenplay.

The project has been in the works for years. First announced in 2010 when Winfrey’s Harpo Films acquired the book rights, the media mogul was attached to produce, alongside Ball, for HBO Films. The project has sat in development, but now with Winfrey attached to star, has been put on the fast-track with filming beginning this summer.

Oprah Signs For HBO's "Henrietta Lacks"

Oprah Winfrey has signed on for the title role in "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" for HBO Films.

Based on Rebecca Skloot's nonfiction bestseller, the story follows a poor black woman who died of cervical cancer in 1951. Without her consent, pieces of the tumor that killed her were removed and used for medical exploration and to build a billion-dollar research industry.

Both Winfrey and "Six Feet Under" creator Alan Ball have been attached as executive producers for several years, but the project is only now moving forward and will begin shooting this Summer.

George C. Wolfe ("Lackawanna Blues," "Angels in America") wrote the screenplay and will direct, while Peter Macdissi, Carla Gardini and Lydia Dean Pilcher will executive produce.

Alan Ball can't remember whose idea it was to end "Six Feet Under" with an orchestra of death. He just remembers that of all the ideas that were brought up for how to end HBO's dearly departed drama — which first premiered 15 years ago — it was the one that felt the most natural. Organisers at the 15th annual Tribeca Film Festival (Tff) unveiled on Monday Tribeca Tune In, featuring six season premieres, three sneak peeks and season finales, three conversations, and four special events.  

Oprah Winfrey will attend the world premiere of Own’s new original drama series Greenleaf, which marks her return to acting in a recurring role.
