Gerard Butler drops out of Point Break remake

7 May 2014 2:13 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

For several reasons, most notably filming of the upcoming London Has Fallen, Gerard Butler has dropped out of Point Break, Alcon’s remake of the early 1990′s classic action movie.

Butler was set to star in the role originally played by Patrick Swayze. It has also been rumoured that there ‘creative differences’ too, so with Butler already having committed to the Olympus Has Fallen sequel maybe that was the final straw?

Producers Alcon are determined to keep to their filming schedule and will be recasting the role in time for late June.

Produced by Broderick Johnson, Andrew Kosove, John Baldecchi, Chris Taylor and Kurt Wimmer, the remake will be directed by Ericson Core. Wimmer, who wrote Equilibrum, has also penned the script.

Gerard Butler Drops Out of ‘Point Break’ Remake

6 May 2014 1:20 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Butler was in line to play Bodhi, the role played by Patrick Swayze in the 1991 original.

Point Break,” co-starring Luke Bracey and Ray Winstone, is still expected to shoot in June.

While the reasons for Butler’s exit are unknown, the “Point Break” production was cutting it close to Butler’s upcoming shoot with the “Olympus Has Fallen” sequel “London Has Fallen,” which may have played a part in his departure. Others site creative differences as a factor.

Ericson Core is helming the pic, which will retain the original story of an FBI agent infiltrating a ring of criminals but will be set in the world of extreme sports.
