"Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys" Review – "He & She Haw"

The cast of Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys Season 2

(all photos courtesy The Sundance Channel)

Sundance Channel's Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys, which this Friday launches its second season, is a reality show about relationships where the connections are durable and have been forged over years, not developed between commercial breaks.

This is a show set in Nashville where you'd expect conservative, Bible Belt attitudes to be on display. But actual people with those views are rarely encountered in the living rooms, coffee shops and bars of our protagonists.

This is a show about a stereotype: straight women who form strong attachments to gay males. But don’t be expecting to see toxic traces of Will & Grace – or even Karen & Jack. With one or two exceptions, these women have full, emotionally-satisfying lives that make room for a best friend who happens to be gay.

Review: "The Strange History of Don't Ask Don't Tell" Shows the Heroes and Villains of a Political Victory

19 September 2011 7:14 AM, PDT | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

You know how you're working on some Glbt political cause, and the issue loses, and some a**hole Republican comes out and says something incredibly homophobic and bigoted? And it's all you can do not to scream at the top of your lungs at the television about how evil they are, but how you finally calm yourself down by saying, "We may have lost for now, but history is going to remember this, and in the end, we're going to win, and everyone will see the other side for exactly what they are!"

The new HBO documentary The Strange History of Don't Ask Don't Tell is "history" finally setting the record straight, at least on the issue of gays in the military.

This film, which was made by longtime out documentarians Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato (Becoming Chaz, The Eyes of Tammy Faye, RuPaul's Drag Race), will debut tonight at midnight. »

HBO doc tracks the death of Don't Ask, Don't Tell -- Exclusive Clip

“Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” the policy barring gay people from serving openly in the military, should be history on Sept. 20. That’s when President Obama’s repeal of the law is scheduled to go into effect — and when a documentary on the controversial policy, The Strange History of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, premieres on HBO. The film, by directors Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato (The Eyes of Tammy Faye), tracks the 17 years it took to overturn the policy — starting with President Clinton’s signature signing into law in 1993 and ending with Obama’s repeal in Dec. »

Happy 28th Birthday to Jake Silbermann. *sigh* I wonder if Luke and Noah are together?

Those safe-sex ads I mentioned in yesterday's Briefs have been reinstated, thanks to the outpouring of criticism that ad company Adshel received. Below you can see the first episode of Ski Camp, the sequel to the Aussie web series Surf Camp. "The five Ski Campers – Mike, Kirk, Dan, Brodie and Adam – face challenge after challenge to whittle them down each episode until there is just one winner left. Who will be the ultimate Ski Camp champ? You will decide." Hmm ... I think my favorite is the guy with no body hair.

Transgender Cinema: Becoming Chaz, Gun Hill Road

11 May 2011 4:47 PM, PDT | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Transgender continues to be a hot topic in the media. Five months after Own's debut, Oprah Winfrey finally delivered on her Sundance promise to do for docs what she did for books. Own's Documentary Club launched Tuesday with the Sundance doc about the son of Sonny and Cher, Becoming Chaz, which ranked fifth in its time period among all ad supported cable networks in the key female demo. Numbers were also strong for the follow-up show, as “The Doc Club with Rosie O’Donnell” hosted a Q & A with Bono and girlfriend Jennifer Elia. Cher herself calls the child who was born Chastity her daughter, still, and seems remarkably uncomfortable throughout Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato's doc about what her kid is going through. Are »

Review: Oprah’s Doc Club Begins with Transgender Chaz Bono Film

11 May 2011 11:58 AM, PDT | James on ScreenS | See recent James on ScreenS news »

Becoming Chaz, which follows Chastity Bono though hormone therapy and the surgical removal of her breasts until she physically and legally becomes a man named Chaz, is a remarkably intimate, unsentimental view of that transition. Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato’s film, the first in the ambitious series called the Documentary Club on Oprah Winfrey’s Own network, premiered last night (and will be repeated several times). And it would have been even more eye-opening if I hadn’t seen so much of it and heard so much from Chaz on The Oprah Winfrey Show the day before. You might also have caught… »

'Becoming Chaz' at Hot Docs: An Exploratory Look at Transitioning

4 May 2011 9:45 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

Filed under: Documentaries, Festivals, Hot Docs Film Festival, Moviefone Canada

There's a certain amount of tabloid curiosity surrounding 'Becoming Chaz,' and it's no surprise. This documentary doesn't focus on an unknown figure about to break into the world through cinema; it's about the daughter of Sonny and Cher transitioning from female to male.

Iconic parents, inside scoops and sexual reassignment are the types of factoids that pique public curiosity, but dirt is not served up by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato's latest doc. The men behind 'Party Monster' and 'Inside Deep Throat' have worked with Chaz Bono to document his transition, and with Bono acting as an executive producer, this isn't a dirt-digging, revelatory document.

It is, however, one whose worth transcends celebrity curiosity.

This Week In Trailers: The Last Rites Of Joe May, Island, Behind The Walls (Derriere Les Murs), Becoming Chaz, Blood In The Mobile

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? Becoming Chaz Trailer Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato are the film equivalent of sociological documentarians. If ever there was a duo who have damn well »
