In 1973, he debuted in the Minneappolis-based American Wrestling Association.
On February 20, 1978, he defeated Billy Graham to win the WWWF World Heavyweight title. He held the title until December 26, 1983 when Iron Sheik defeated him for the WWF title when Arnold Scaaland (Bob's manager) tossed in the towel.
In 1993 Bob Backlund made his inspirational return to the WWF as a mid-card babyface. He wrestled in that year's 30-Man Royal Rumble entering at #2 and lasted for over an hour. He was the #28th man eliminated.
Challenged Bret Hart to a WWF title match, and after Hart won, snapped and turned heel. At the Survivor Series later that year he defeated Bret Hart to win the WWF Heavyweight title. He only held the title for a couple of days before losing it to Kevin Nash (Diesel).
