In addition to his visual effects work, Backes is a partner in Oxonian LLC, a media company he founded with author Michael Crichton and computer scientist David Smith. In late 1998, he began writing an untitled computer-animated feature film with Mark Dippe, the director of Spawn.

Backes founded the American Film Institute Advanced Technology Program.

He sits on the board of Steven Spielberg's Starbright Foundation, which uses film industry technology to assist seriously-ill children. He also sits on the advisory board of the Japan Electronics Show.

In cooperation with the Kurosawa estate, he is also completing an unfinished screenplay by director Akira Kurosawa, based on a short story by Edgar Allen Poe.
