DVD Review - The Bigfoot Tapes (Bigfoot County) (2012)

The Bigfoot Tapes (a.k.a. Bigfoot County), 2012.

Written and Directed by Stephon Stewart.Starring Stephon Stewart, Davee Youngblood, Shy Pilgreen and Sam Ayers.

Synopsis:

Siskiyou County, California has the most reported Bigfoot sightings in the world. In August of 2009, a documentary filmmaker went to investigate these alleged sightings.

Two guys and a girl go into the woods with a camera to film a documentary on a local legend. Sadly, things don’t go to well for them and the camera never turns off. Sound familiar?

There is a certain amount of comparisons that can be made between The Bigfoot Tapes (known as Bigfoot County Stateside) and the 1999 ground-breaking found footage godfather The Blair Witch Project. Both feature a similar set up and both feature the same cast of characters getting into the same kind of trouble. The major difference between them however is while The Blair Witch Project felt

‘The Bigfoot Tapes’ Review

Stars: Stephon Stewart, Davee Youngblood, Shy Pilgreen, Sam Ayers, Don Scribner, Brad S. Clayton, Michael Villar, Joey Napoli, Johnnie Colter | Written and Directed by Stephon Stewart

The second Bigfoot flick to hit DVD in the past six months, The Bigfoot Tapes is a found-footage film that sees a documentary filmmaker, his brother and his girlfriend investigating Bigfoot sightings in Siskiyou County after hearing a 911 call from a man claiming his dog was eaten by Bigfoot. Setting out to interview the man who had the encounter with Bigfoot, what follows is captured footage of a series of distressing, unfortunate events proving the existence of this terrifying creature’s existence.

Writer/actor/director Stephon Stewart brings us yet another found-footage horror flick. However unlike a lot of its contemporaries this film follows a tried and tested documentary-style formula, bringing us what can only be described as “The Blair Bigfoot Project.” Now I’ve said it before,

Q&A with Bigfoot County Director Stephon Stewart

  • DailyDead
Grindstone and Lionsgate Home Entertainment recently released Bigfoot County on DVD and we had a chance to talk with director Stephon Stewart about the making of the film. Continue reading to learn about his thoughts on the Bigfoot myth, the challenges of getting the film made, upcoming projects, and his advice for independent filmmakers:

Have you always been interested in the Bigfoot myth? What can you tell us about your experience with the myth growing up?

Stephon Stewart: Ever since I was 10 years old I have been fascinated with the legend of Bigfoot. I remember my mother showing me the famous 1967 Bluff Creek footage and she would say that is America’s King Kong. That footage has always gave me chills back then and still does to this day.

What inspired you to write this screenplay? Was any of this based on real life accounts or something from your past?

Bigfoot County DVD is Coming to Feast this Winter!

Director/writer: Stephon Stewart. Cast: Stephon Stewart, Davee Youngblood, Shy Pilgreen, Sam Ayers, and Don Scribner. Some cryptozoological legends do not want to be put on stage, and quite honestly, that should be respected. In Bigfoot County, three filmmakers may not know what that means. They will be going into a dangerous field to get famous. But in Siskiyou County, North California, this area is famous for numerous sightings of this dark furry beast and no one from around the world will be watching. Maybe the creatures from Orleans, California have moved to Siskiyou, or they are a different family altogether. Anthropologists should note that these two areas are very close together. When this film references the famous Patterson/Gimlin footage, just where these beasts are from can be hard to say. And they are very camera shy. But according to the trailer, they do not want to be bothered.
