Played "Lord Montague" along with actor Jesse Borrego who played "Mercutio" in the Ahmanson Theatre's production of "Romeo & Juliet" (2001).

On 27 April 2002, served as a presenter for the inaugrural Celebration of Excellence Awards, presented by the Organization of Black Screenwriters to honor writers whose work has "consistently been of high quality, and who have greatly contributed to the diversity of stories told through the television and film media." He presented an award to writer/producer Nancy Miller.

(June-September 2005) James Avery plays the title character in a Los Angeles production of "Othello" at Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum in Topanga, CA.
