Omar Sharif in 'Doctor Zhivago.' Egyptian star Omar Sharif, 'The Karate Kid' producer Jerry Weintraub: Brief career recaps A little late in the game – and following the longish Theodore Bikel article posted yesterday – below are brief career recaps of a couple of film veterans who died in July 2015: actor Omar Sharif and producer Jerry Weintraub. A follow-up post will offer an overview of the career of peplum (sword-and-sandal movie) actor Jacques Sernas, whose passing earlier this month has been all but ignored by the myopic English-language media. Omar Sharif: Film career beginnings in North Africa The death of Egyptian film actor Omar Sharif at age 83 following a heart attack on July 10 would have been ignored by the English-language media (especially in the U.S.) as well had Sharif remained a star within the Arabic-speaking world. After all, an "international" star is only worth remembering »

3 March 2015 12:35 PM, PST | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

To Helen Mirren’s many roles, add Broadway fairy godmother, as Cherry Jones discovered when she was starring in in The Heiress, back in 1995. “I was in the shower at the Court Theater, for The Heiress. And I heard this gorgeous English voice come into my dressing room and talk to my dresser,” the Broadway actress told Vulture at the Roundabout Theatre’s gala on Monday. “And when I got out of the shower, I said, ‘Who was that?’ And she said it was Helen Mirren,” Jones said, laughing. “I said, ‘What?!’ And on a spiral-notebook page was this piece of paper from Helen saying that she was initiating ‘Broadway dish night,’ at Un Deux Trois, after the show on Thursday nights. And that first night there were 12 of us, and I can tell you who was there, including Eileen Atkins and Matthew Broderick and Robbie Baitz and Joe Mantello, »

Sometimes ideas that are good on paper just don't work out in execution. Case in point: "Suite Française." A World War II drama/romance starring Michelle Williams and Matthias Schoenaerts sounds awesome, but the movie from director Saul Dibb ("The Duchess") quietly premiered for industry types at the American Film Market and is now being released internationally while it still awaits a stateside date from The Weinstein Company. Call it what you like, but it looks like the studio is feeling less hopeful about the film's prospects. A new dubbed, French trailer (via Michelle Williams Online) has arrived for the film, offering a glimpse at some new scenes along with UK TV spot. Polak reveals Vita and Virginia details

13 February 2015 7:04 AM, PST | ScreenDaily | See recent ScreenDaily news »

Dutch director Sacha Polak has revealed further details of her first English-language project, Vita and Virginia.

The film, based on the play by Eileen Atkins, tells the story of the passionate love affair between writers Virginia Woolf and Vita Sackville-West. Both women were members of the free thinking Bloomsbury set but their lesbian affair scandalised parts of British society. Sackville-West was married to the celebrated politician and diarist, Harold Nicholson.

Romola Garai has come on board to play Sackville-West.

“She (Garai) is so interesting and sexy. She will be the perfect Vita,” said Polak, who was at this year’s Berlinale with new film Zurich, sold by Beta.

The part of Woolf will be cast shortly. Polak insists that her film’s Woolf won’t be the “gloomy” and “depressing” figure with the prosthetic nose played by Nicole Kidman in The Hours.

“We are keen on showing another Virginia Woolf, a funny one »

Veteran Dutch producer Stienette Bosklopper, owner and MD of Circe Film, is turning screenwriter and has written two projects already in advanced development.

Bosklopper, whose credits include Wolfsbergen and Brownian Movement, will be at this week’s Iffr CineMart in Rotterdam in a dual capacity - as screenwriter and producer of Nanouk Leopold’s new feature, Cobain.

The €1.6m film, which has already received backing from the Netherlands Film Fund, is being coproduced with Waterland Film.

“It’s part of a personal development you have at a certain stage in your career,” the producer says of her foray into screenwriting.

“I had been working with a lot of writers and directors. Somehow, there was an urge to contribute on a different level. To my own amazement, it is going very well. It comes quite naturally and I have the feeling that I will be continuing doing this.”
