In some ways, episodes six and seven of this season could be regarded as a connected pair. Both episodes worked as an extended examination of Richie’s emotional travails and both of them used a particular narrative device to do so. In last week’s episode, the twist was that, in thinking that Ernst really was accompanying him, Richie knew less than the audience (assuming that, in this post Fight Club/Sixth Sense cultural environment, you all saw the reveal coming).
