RopeofSilicon Movie Club: 'The Sugarland Express' (1974)

5 November 2012 1:00 PM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I was trying to figure out what genre Steven Spielberg's The Sugarland Express fits in while preparing today's Movie Club entry. It's definitely got drama as Lou Jean (Goldie Hawn), an ex-con, convinces her husband Clovis (William Atherton) to break out of pre-release four months before he's due to be released free and clear. Their goal is to make a run for Sugarland, Texas where they hope to get their child out of foster care, a child that was removed from their custody due to the misdemeanors that landed them in prison. These two eventually hit the road by hitching a ride with an elderly couple, but the fact the old man won't drive any faster than 30 miles an hour on the freeway results in them stealing the car. A police chase ensues, ultimately resulting in the kidnapping of a police officer (Michael Sacks) and hijacking his cruiser. To »

Movie Club Reminder: Steven Spielberg's 'The Sugarland Express'

1 November 2012 2:00 PM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Considering the conversation after the first three Movie Club entries has already shown a steady decline I thought I would get the reminder out a little earlier this week. We will be discussing Steven Spielberg's debut feature film The Sugarland Express on Monday, November 5 and hopefully many of you will have taken the time to watch it and join in the conversation. The film was released in 1974 and stars Goldie Hawn, William Atherton and Ben Johnson and is based on true events that took place in May of 1969. The story, as told in the film, follows a young couple, one just released from jail, the other with four months left in pre-release, who hijack a police cruiser on their way to getting their son back and out of foster care. Spielberg would follow this film up with Jaws and his career would never be the same from that point on. »

'Ghostbusters 3' Returns from the Grave; Will Start Production Next Summer

18 October 2012 9:43 AM, PDT | Movies.com | See recent Movies.com news »

You didn't think this would all just go away, did you? Based on how popular the Ghostbusters 3 news has been over the past couple of years, it really was a no-brainer for the studio to figure out a way to make this happen -- and figure out a way they have. According to Deadline, production is set to begin on Ghostbusters 3 this summer (fingers and toes crossed!), with plans to finally bring the sequel to theaters in 2014 to coincide with the original film's 30th anniversary. Ivan Reitman will direct, and as of this moment Bill Murray won't be in it. Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis will return, and we assume Ernie Hudson will be there too, as well as Sigourney Weaver. Heck, if they can also find some wiggle room for Annie Potts, William Atherton and a surprise return by...

Even the Morons of "Jersey Shore" Deserve a Better Death Than This "Shark Attack"

30 August 2012 8:10 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Just as MTV blesses us with the good news that the idiocy of the Jersey Shore will be coming to an end next season, SyFy brings us an amalgamation of ideas too good to pass up: Jersey Shore Shark Attack. Or is it?

The film's scene is set by loosely referencing a spree of historic shark attacks that plagued the Jersey shore in 1916, the actual event claiming four lives and inspiring Peter Benchley’s book Jaws that would become the definitive shark film of all time. Since then, there has been no sign of the killer sharks, until a villainous real estate mogul (William Atherton) drills off shore and sets a small army of red-eyed albino sharks free. A la Jaws, the sheriff and town are slow to come around, but this time it’s “The Complication” (Jeremy Luc) and Nookie (Melissa Molinaro) ringing the warning bells.
