Defiance season 2 episode 2 review: In My Secret Life

27 June 2014 4:14 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

After a bumpy start, Defiance is quickly on track towards an interesting second season. Here's Billy's review...

Review

This review contains spoilers.

2.2 In My Secret Life

My disenchantment with the opening episode of Defiance was soon forgotten by this significantly better story, In My Secret Life. The theme of all the shenanigans packed into these forty-two minutes, was that we all have lives we think are secret, but they rarely are completely.

The return of Nolan and Irisa coincides with a terrorist incident, though oddly nobody points out any potential connection. That’s good, because really there isn’t any. This has more to do with Tarrs, and their organised crime troubles, than anything Nolan should be concerning himself. But, like a moth to a flame, he’s drawn into leading the investigation with the excuse of getting Irisa out of E-Rep custody.

There were plenty of things to like as this story unfolded, »

Defiance: Season Two Ratings

24 June 2014 12:44 PM, PDT | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

The first season of Defiance performed very well for Syfy. Will season two be a ratings success as well? Will Defiance be renewed for a third season or will it be cancelled instead? Stay tuned to find out.

This show takes place in the year 2047 -- some 30 years after various alien races arrived on Earth. The town of Defiance (what used to be St. Louis) stands as an example of how humans and aliens can live harmoniously (mostly) together. The cast includes Grant Bowler, Julie Benz, Stephanie Leonidas, Jaime Murray, Tony Curran, Graham Greene, Jesse Rath, Nicole Munoz, Dewshane Williams, Jim Murray, Anna Hopkins, and William Atherton.

The ratings are typically the best indication of a show's likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes »

Defiance season 2 episode 1 review: The Opposite Of Hallelujah

22 June 2014 6:03 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Billy welcomes the return of sci-fi western, Defiance. Here's his review of the season two opener...

Review

This review contains spoilers.

2.1 The Opposite Of Hallelujah

After a first season that mixed good with not so great, probably in equal proportions, I was still glad to see the return of this quirky show. Between some weak characters and predictable narrative constructs, it managed to offer up some really memorable ideas and personas. And, unusually for this channel, it also provided some real plot twists on occasion. At its core, the show is essentially a western with alien prosthetics and a twist of mysticism thrown in.

After an eleven month hiatus, Defiance is back, and it’s no less mercurial than before.

Calling The Opposite Of Hallelujah a story would be generally inaccurate, because almost none of what goes on is joined up in any way. What we get instead is a snapshot of the main characters, »

Sigourney Weaver Reveals Crucial 'Ghostbusters 3' Plot Details

9 June 2014 3:57 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

After years of speculation and rumors, it seems that the highly-anticipated Ghostbusters reboot/sequel is finally moving forward, with Ruben Fleischer currently circling the project as his next directorial effort. It has long been reported that the story will feature cameos from original Ghostbusters stars Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson, who will help usher in a new generation of Ghostbusters. In a recent interview, Sigourney Weaver claims that she will only return as Dana Barrett if her son Oscar from Ghostbusters 2 is one of the new Ghostbusters.

Here's what she had to say to Vanity Fair about her conversation with director Ivan Reitman, who had already implemented that idea into the story.

"I said, I have one condition. I want my son Oscar [from Ghostbusters 2] to be a Ghostbuster, and he said, 'We've already done that.'"

Sony Pictures production president Doug Belgrad also issued a brief statement in regards to the progress of Ghostbusters. »

Ghostbusters 30th anniversary: 30 things you never knew

8 June 2014 1:00 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Ghostbusters, the comedy classic that spawned a hit single, a sequel, a cartoon series and inspiration for countless fancy dress parties, celebrates its 30th anniversary today (June 8).

While we patiently wait for the long-in-development Ghostbusters 3, here are 30 things you may or may not now about the 1984 movie.

1. In the early '80s, Dan Aykroyd read an article on quantum physics and parapsychology in The Journal of the American Society for Psychical Research. That, coupled with his family's long-standing interest in the paranormal, served as the catalyst for Ghostbusters.

2. Speaking of Aykroyd's family, his great grandfather was a psychic investigator, his grandfather an engineer who created a high-vibration crystal radio to contact the spirit world and his father kept a substantial library of books on the paranormal.

3. The first script drafts of Ghostbusters focused on three characters who battled ghouls with wands instead of proton packs, while the action took »

The top 50 assholes in cinema

Odd List Andrew Blair 25 Apr 2014 - 06:29

They're despicable, smug and downright unpleasant. Andrew lines up his pick of 50 biggest unpleasant, sometimes heroic folk in cinema...

Nb: This article contains swearing and spoilers for numerous films. Bear in mind that it may be not safe for work, and if you haven't seen a film mentioned in a particular entry, do consider skipping to the next one.

Conflict drives drama. Unpleasant people create conflict. Thus, cinema is crammed with huge, provocative arseholes/assholes (we went with the latter on the headline, but now we're in the article, we're going more arse than ass). There are obviously too many to list, but we've provided you with a thought-provoking array of multi-faceted bell-endery. That said, feel free to copy and paste the phrase, "Nice list, but you forgot x" to save time when placing comments below! The 'nice' bit is not compulsory.

Fearnet Movie Review: 'Jinn'

7 April 2014 1:30 PM, PDT | FEARnet | See recent FEARnet news »

One cannot let bad movies get in the way of being a horror geek. We struggle through tons of rotten movies (that usually have great promotional artwork) in order to locate the good and occasionally great pieces of genre cinema -- but sometimes a really bad horror flick is nothing short of mystifying. As in: not only is the new indie horror / thriller Jinn an outrageously bad film, but how does something so amateurish make it way into 150 theaters while great indies open in 16 theaters and VOD at the same time?   Money, that's how. The company that bankrolled the SyFy-grade Jinn (and jammed it with bizarre promotions for an automobile) also paid for a semi-wide release. So this is not a case of a distributor risking money on an indie film they really like; it's a bunch of wannabe filmmakers playing pretend. And boy does the result show on the screen. »

Film Review: ‘Jinn’

7 April 2014 9:02 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

As an attention-grabbing opening installment for what’s obviously intended as an ongoing horror franchise, “Jinn” fizzles. This ponderously paced, needlessly convoluted and altogether unexceptional thriller will be fortunate to reach beyond a thin sliver of undiscriminating genre fans with its bogus mythos about ancient evil spirits bent on world domination. The promise of a sequel during the closing credits seems, at best, unduly optimistic.

After a less-than-promising prologue in 1901 India, writer-director Ajmal Zaheer Ahmad moves his melodrama to contemporary Ann Arbor, Mich., where Shawn (Dominic Rains), a hunky auto designer, and Jasmine (Serinda Swan of TV’s “Graceland” and “Breakout Kings”), his beautiful wife, are unsettled by manifestations of, if not the supernatural, then extremely clumsy home invaders.

The secret behind the scattering of their furniture is revealed when the designer receives a decades-old message — so old, it’s on a VHS tape, not a DVD or flash drive — from his late father. »
