Rebel Wilson Sells Comedy Pitch To Universal That She'll Write & Star In

10 October 2012 7:22 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Coming off a great performance in “Pitch Perfect,” which is performing solidly in theaters at the moment, Rebel Wilson’s career looks in pretty great shape. She’s got a lead role in Miguel Arteta’s brewing indie comedy “Unicorn Store,” "Glee" star Chris Colfer’s “Struck By Lightning,” and Michael Bay’s “Pain and Gain” on her upcoming slate, and her self-penned comedy pilot “Super Fun Night” is also in development over at ABC. As if all that isn’t enough, Wilson has now struck a deal with Universal who have picked up her untitled comedy pitch. There are very few details available on the project at the moment, but what we do know is that Wilson’s pitch is based on an original idea and that she is attached to write, produce and star. Universal distributed “Pitch Perfect” and “Bridesmaids,” and they’re clearly keen on staying in the Rebel. »

Sparkly! Rebel Wilson Saddles Up for Lead Role in ‘Unicorn Store’

14 August 2012 5:00 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Rebel Wilson is scary funny. She’s also quite brave – after all, how many other comedians would be game enough to have their big introduction to Hollywood feature them pouring frozen peas on their hideous free back tattoo on the big screen? And how many could make that actually read as funny? (We are speaking, of course, about her breakout supporting role in Bridesmaids.) Also, how many people could make What To Expect When You’re Expecting amusing in the slightest or put some charm into a film I otherwise detested (now we’re talking Bachelorette)? Wilson can! And I’ll follow her career to the ends of the Earth as thank you. Fortunately, her next role sounds pretty easily followable. Variety reports that Wilson has snagged the lead role in Unicorn Store, an indie comedy set to be helmed by Cedar Rapids director Miguel Arteta. Not much is known about the film, but »

'Bridesmaids' Star Rebel Wilson To Lead Miguel Arteta's 'Unicorn Store'

14 August 2012 12:40 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

While larger than life funny guys like Kevin James and Seth Rogen can command leading roles in movies, when it comes to women, the playbook isn't the same. Sure, women are allowed to be funny too, but generally only if they’re deemed skinny and attractive enough first. Hell, they even cast Renee Zellweger as Bridget Jones. But the tide is changing... And that’s why it’s so refreshing to see Aussie actress Rebel Wilson starting to get a number of supporting comic roles. She’s starting to build up an solid resume after attention-grabbing roles in the likes of “Bridesmaids” (which also served as a launchpad for an unconvential leading lady in Melissa McCarthy), “What to Expect When You’re Expecting,” and the upcoming films “Pitch Perfect” and “Bachelorette.” Well now she’s gone one better and bagged the lead role in Miguel Arteta’s indie comedy “Unicorn Store. »

‘Bridesmaids’ Star Rebel Wilson Will Buy a ‘Unicorn’ For ‘Cedar Rapids’ Director Miguel Arteta

14 August 2012 6:00 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

With a knack for mixing strong characters and flat-out hilarity as smoothly as Miguel Arteta, it’s unfortunate the director is as overlooked as he is. After delivering both Youth in Revolt and Cedar Rapids, the director has now added another film to his pile and attached a major up-and-coming star to lead.

Variety reports that Arteta has come on to direct a comedy titled Unicorn Store, which will be led by Austrialian actress Rebel Wilson, who broke out last year by stealing the show in Bridesmaids and taking a much different turn in the recently released Bachelorette. Scripted by Bored to Death‘s Samantha McIntyre, the film follows “a lonely young woman who has never had a boyfriend tries to fix her life by purchasing a unicorn.”

Miguel Arteta Gets the '47 Rules of Highly Effective Bank Robbers'

16 July 2012 12:40 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Back at Sundance 2011, director Miguel Arteta helped Ed Helms prove his abilities as a leading man with the comedy Cedar Rapids, but before that he brought the book Youth in Revolt to the big screen with Michael Cera. Since then, the director has been busy at the helm of episodes of TV series like "New Girl" and "American Horror Story," but Variety reports Arteta is getting back to feature films with an adaptation of Troy Cook's novel 47 Rules of Highly Effective Bank Robbers, a film that producer Richard Gladstein from FilmColony says is "a very fast-paced, poppy kind of movie, in the vein of True Romance." Interesting. Mandalay Pictures is also behind the film which follows a pair of lovers running from their families, the law and outrageous underworld characters as they rob banks across the South. 'Cedar Rapids' Director Miguel Arteta To Run Down The '47 Rules Of Highly Effective Bank Robbers'

13 July 2012 3:49 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

It has been a while since we've heard anything from "Cedar Rapids" helmer Miguel Arteta. After his comedy for Fox Searchlight came and went without much fanfare, he's largely been working in the television world, helming episodes of "The Big C," "How To Make It In America," "American Horror Story," "Enlightened," "House Of Lies," "Nurse Jackie" and the pilot for "The Sex & The City" prequel/spinoff "The Carrie Diaries." But it looks like the helmer is making a return to the feature film game. Variety reports that Arteta will be taking on an adaptation of Tim Cook's crime novel "47 Rules Of Highly Effective Bank Robbers." Described by producer Richard Gladstein as being in the vein of "True Romance" -- and seemingly deviating slightly from the plot of the book -- the story follows a pair of lovers who rob their way across the south, avoiding their families, »

‘Cedar Rapids’ Director Miguel Arteta Getting Criminal For ‘Bank Robbers’

13 July 2012 7:26 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

There are few comedy directors in Hollywood that are as underrated as Miguel Arteta. With a string of character-focused, hilarious films including Youth in Revolt and Cedar Rapids, his efforts never get the box-office they deserve. While he spends his off-time with a heavy dose of TV directing, he’s now set his next feature project and it’s a bit of a depature.

Variety reports that Arteta has signed on to direct 47 Rules of Highly Effective Bank Robbers, based on the comedy crime novel by Troy Cook. Described as “in the vein of True Romance,” the film will have a more “dynamic and visceral” when compared to his previous film. Scripted by Ryan Knighton, the helmer will even have a chance to take on some action setpieces in the “fast-paced, poppy” film. Check out a synopsis of the original novel below thanks to Amazon, and if his previous films are any indication, »

Alexander Payne & Jim Taylor To Preview New Script 'The Lost Cause' At Nantucket Film Festival

29 May 2012 6:41 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Well, this is certainly an unconventional way for a new project from Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor to be announced, but we guess it's as effective a way as any. The duo have re-teamed for a new script, which will be previewed at a headlining staged reading at next month's Nantucket Film Festival.

Titled "The Lost Cause," the project looks to be an expansion of Taylor's 2004 short film of the same name. While there's no mention of who is taking the helm, Taylor is notably directing the stage reading, so he may be following his compatriot into full-length features. If not, it still seems unlikely that Payne would take the reigns with a fair bit on his upcoming slate (including "Nebraska," which he hopes will star Bruce Dern and Will Forte, around the corner). Either way, the project does sound intriguing. The coming-of-age story centers on a cleaner who moonlights as a Civil War reenacter, »

'New Girl' Stand-Out Max Greenfield Joins Paul Rudd & Amy Poehler In 'They Came Together'

16 May 2012 4:18 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

You'd be forgiven for having tuned out of, or indeed never ventured near, Fox's Zooey Deschanel-starring sitcom "New Girl." The series, about an oddball girl who moves in with three male housemates, had a generic premise, an infuriating ad campaign, and a very patchy first few episodes. But over time, it's very much found its foot: the writing's gotten sharp and very funny, the direction's been strong (thanks to a selection of indie talent including John Hamburg, Miguel Arteta, Jesse Peretz, Lynn Shelton, and Nanette Burnstein) and the cast have gelled into an impressive comic ensemble. It's not going to change your life or anything, but it's steadily evolved into a highly enjoyable show.

First and foremost among the cast is Max Greenfield, who plays progressive douchebag Schmidt on the show. Starting out as a stereotype, the character's gotten richer and weirder over time, and Greenfield, a familiar face »

Watch: "Wanderlust' Helmer David Wain Directed Tonight's 'New Girl'

"Secrets," tonight's episode of Fox's Zooey Deschanel comedy (is that its own genre?) "New Girl" was directed by David Wain, who on Twitter reminded the world that "Tonight's your chance to see how I pulled the puppet strings of @ZooeyDeschanel et al." Wain, whose latest big-screen directing effort "Wanderlust" opened in theaters in February, has mostly kept to directing his own work on TV, with "Stella," "The State" and "Children's Hospital," though he did also helm the community theater episode of the late, lamented "Party Down." "New Girl" has managed to bring in a nice array of indie-ish comedy directors to oversee episodes of its first season. Lynn Shelton ("Humpday"), Miguel Arteta ("Chuck & Buck," "Cedar Rapids") and Jesse Peretz ("Our Idiot Brother") have also directed episodes, and Jake Kasdan »
