McConaughey and Armstrong: "We're Not Gay"

19 October 2006 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Matthew McConaughey and Tour De France winner Lance Armstrong have laughed off rumours they are gay and insist they're nothing more than great friends. The two, along with pal Jake Gyllenhaal, were frequently photographed together this summer - often shirtless - biking, running and partying. The pair's close bond even sparked a new term - a "bro-mance." McConaughey addresses the rumors in the new issue of Details magazine joking, "We tried it (being gay). It wasn't for us." The two Austin, Texas, natives had known each other for eight years, and really began to bond when they both found themselves back on the dating scene at the same time. McConaughey, 36, had broken up with actress Penelope Cruz, while Armstrong, 35, had called off his engagement to singer Sheryl Crow. Armstrong explains, "Our relationship just kind of developed. He got out of a relationship; I'd just gotten out of a relationship. We all have those kinds of relationships - and relationship isn't a bad word. I mean, we all have buds, we all take guy trips, but you take something very normal and you put it in a magazine, and people start talking." McConaughey adds, "A lot of people don't understand friendship and brotherhood. I have a great friend in him. It's fun going out and living life and doing things at the drop of a hat." Armstrong insists the actor's laid-back lifestyle has been a good influence on him - especially when it comes to tabloid gossip. He adds, "His idea is like, 'Look, it is what it is, so go out there and have fun.' He's truly carefree - which is to say, he truly doesn't care." »

McConaughey Plays Bartender to Armstrong

14 July 2006 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Matthew McConaughey was given a very special job at the ESPY Awards in Hollywood on Wednesday night - host Lance Armstrong's personal bartender. The two Texans have become firm friends and retired cyclist Armstrong often stays with the Sahara star when he's in Los Angeles. The hunks have even started training together. And, to thank him for all his cycling tips, McConaughey agreed to make margaritas for Armstrong backstage so the Tour De France champ could calm his nerves during the sports awards ceremony. Armstrong says, "He said, 'What do you need from me?' I said, 'I need you there at 5:30, making 'ritas.' He said, 'I'll be there.'" Armstrong, who claimed the night's Athlete Of The Year honor for the fourth time, was surprised by another famous pal when funnyman Will Ferrell took to the stage for an unannounced musical tribute to the cycling hero. Other big winners at the ESPY Awards included movie mogul Jerry Bruckheimer, who claimed the Best Film prize for his sports movie Glory Road. »

Crow Told Armstrong To Stay Away

11 July 2006 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Sheryl Crow told her ex-fiance Lance Armstrong to support her from a distance when she was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year. The singer, 44, learned she had the illness just two weeks after the couple ended their engagement. Crow tells Vanity Fair magazine, "It was difficult, you know. I know he wanted to be there. I do think about Lance every day. And I think about his kids every day." Cycling champion and cancer survivor Armstrong was driving from California to Oregon when his ex phoned to break the bad news. He says, "When I got that news, I can't even describe it. It was the cruellest twist. I actually turned around to make the drive to LA. We talked along the way and she said, 'You know, I just don't think that's a great idea.' (Sheryl told me) it would be hard on her in trying to manage the break up and the diagnosis. And I totally understood." »

Crow Dumped Lance Because He Wouldn't Change for Her

6 July 2006 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Rocker Sheryl Crow has hinted she split up with cycling hero Lance Armstrong because the Tour De France champion refused to change for her. The couple shocked fans when they announced they had split earlier this year, just six months after becoming engaged, and now Crow is celebrating her successful breast cancer battle by revealing all about her broken romance in a new TV interview. Crow sat down with US newswoman Diane Sawyer to tape a chat for breakfast show Good Morning America, which airs today and tomorrow, and insisted she's not bitter about the break-up. She told Sawyer, "I'm not angry. I mean, honestly, I look at it and I just know that I can't be angry at Lance for being who he is. He's a great person." Crow also uses the interview to clear up reports that cancer survivor Armstrong dumped the rocker when he discovered she had been diagnosed with the disease. When asked if the rumors are true, she shook her head and said, "No, no." »

Armstrong Speaks of Crow Heartbreak

8 February 2006 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Cyclist Lance Armstrong is "torn" that his relationship with Sheryl Crow didn't work out, because she showed him a love he'd never experienced before. The Tour De France star announced his engagement and romance with Crow was over at the weekend and mentioned the split briefly on his satellite radio show on Sunday night, which he closed with a favorite Crow song, "Letter To God." Acknowledging his troubled week, Armstrong said, "Obviously, this week was a rough week for us, but that doesn't change the fact that I think Sheryl is an unbelievable lady, one of the smartest, wisest, most gifted people I've ever met and a person that I can honestly say has shown me a love that I never knew. It's only fair that I say that and it's only fair that we play one of her songs tonight and not run from the situation. I'm torn that it didn't work out but that doesn't matter. Fans of mine are fans of hers and hopefully fans of hers are fans of mine. She's a great lady and it deserves to be that way. So this is my favorite song, which I think we've played before on the show, on her newest record. It's a song called 'Letter To God'." The pair got engaged in September. The seven-time Tour De France champion, who famously overcame testicular cancer, has three children from a previous marriage, while Crow was set to wed for the first time. »
