Mario Bava turns from spooky gothic tales to a relentlessly violent murder spree in the glossy world of high fashion. The large cast gives us a fistful of prime suspects, while the main draw is Bava's powerful direction and razor-keen images - and in this excellent transfer, the colors can only be described as hallucinatory. Mario Bava’s Blood and Black Lace may not be the first Giallo film but it is the one that many took inspiration from and the genre itself formed from, especially the themes and style. When a young model is killed by a mysterious masked figure she leaves behind a diary which may hold evidence as to the identity of her assailant. As more women from the same fashion house die at the hands of the killer the police try to find the culprit. In a tale of blood and blackmail, can they stop the killer before it is too late?

April 23 is William Shakespeare's 448th birthday. Maybe. The Bard was baptized on April 26, 1564, and traditionally babies had this done three days after birth. There is no official record of his birth, but considering it's also the day he died, it seems appropriate.
William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-Upon-Avon to Mary Arden and John Shakespeare and died at the age of 52. Not only did he give us a huge library of plays and sonnets, but he invented words and phrases that most people don't even know come from him.
Here are just a few of the sayings that come from Shakespeare. "Fight fire with fire," "fair play" and "foul play," "in a pickle," "love is blind," "star-crossed lovers," "the game is up," "too much of a good thing," "woe is me," "good riddance," "the beast with two backs," "green-eyed monster." The list goes on.

What is a ‘giallo’? – Giallo is Italian for yellow; a term which came from crime/mystery paperbacks with the yellow toned covers. In turn, highly stylized films of the same genre with elements of eroticism became known as ‘giallo’ films themselves.
Why did you pick this film? – Blood And Black Lace is one of the earliest giallo films, from a masterful director. The film has been such a huge influence on many things, and overall this is simply quite a fantastic film and visually one of the best you are likely to see.
Who is behind this one? – It was directed by Mario Bava, a man who got his name and reputation for his gialli and being one of the innovators of the genre. It stars Cameron Mitchell, Eva Bartok, Thomas Reiner, Ariana Gorini, Dante Dipaolo, Mary Arden, Franco Ressel and Claude Dantes.

One of the real joys of Back Catalogue is getting to sift through movies I actually want to watch instead of whatever happens across my desk. This look at the older titles available through Vci Entertainment offered a little bit of everything. Mario Bava, made for TV fare, cult classics, exploitation and even documentary. Needless to say this was quite a viewing party.
Kiss Of The Tarantula was a definite first into the DVD player for me as I loves me some campy spider action. The film follows the mold of other movies like Willard, and Stanley, leaving out the supernatural element. Poor misunderstood, constantly picked on Susan isn't able to control spiders, she just raises them in the family mortuary. And when the locals (and her lecherous uncle) get a little too aggressive poor Susan pops a few of her eight legged friends in for visit.

Today we’re raising a glass to toast the 445th birthday (and incidentally, the 393rd anniversary of the death) of that literary fellow we all know and love as William Shakespeare. Though academics argue that the actual date of when his mother, Mary Arden pushed the little fella out is unknown, 23rd April has commonly become regarded as his birthday and was also the day of his death 52 years later. And so to honour this day, we’re refraining from giving him the bumps and instead settling down to watch some of the best film adaptations of his many glorious plays.
If you fancy some Shakespearean tragedy…
Go all late 90s and weep your heart out over those star-crossed lovers Romeo + Juliet, played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes in the irreverent, colourful and utterly beautiful Baz Luhrmann modern classic. Reach for the Kleenex with Laurence Olivier’s unforgettable turn...
