Review — ‘The Devil’s Candy’ Blasts Genre Thrills and the Devil’s Music Into Your Soul

16 March 2017 12:02 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

‘The Devil’s Candy’ Blasts Genre Thrills and the Devil’s Music Into Your Heathen SoulThe director of ‘The Loved Ones’ returns with another intense and suspenseful thriller.

Writer/director Sean Byrne’s debut feature, The Loved Ones, blew festival audiences (including us) away back in 2009 with thrills and suspense born from seeing a character we truly cared about fighting for his life against increasingly twisted and violent odds. It took three years before it actually opened in the Us, but it was worth the wait. Now Byrne’s equally intense follow-up film is finally being released… after premiering at film fests nearly two years ago.

Once again though, The Devil’s Candy is a blistering, intimate, heavy metal-tinged horror/thriller worth waiting for as it drops a loving family into a devilish nightmare where each violent chord brings them closer to a grim and grisly fate.

Sean Byrne Talks ‘The Devil’s Candy’ and Its Dark Spin on Occult Horror

16 March 2017 10:22 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

The director opens up about how his fears inspired the heavy metal infused homage.

It’s hard to adequately describe The Devil’s Candy, Australian director Sean Byrne’s follow up to 2009’s The Loved Ones. The film, which premiered at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival and was eventually picked up by IFC Midnight for U.S. distribution, is a pastiche of occult horror, demonic possession, and religious mania, while also offering viewers a truly poignant family drama. It’s a pure treat for horror fans but above all else, it’s metal as fuck — literally.

The Devil’s Candy follows the not-so-ordinary Hellman family who move into an isolated but spacious Texas farmhouse, which may be a gateway to something sinister. Ethan Embry stars as Jesse, a struggling painter, who bonds with his daughter, Zooey (Kiara Glasco), over their shared love of heavy metal music. Shiri Appleby rounds up the family as Astrid, the »

Movie Review: The Devil’s Candy plays its heavy-metal horror riff fast and loud

16 March 2017 8:35 AM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Heavy metal and horror movies go together like chocolate and peanut butter, not least because of their shared fascination with Satan. The relationship between the trio goes back to the days when Ozzy Osbourne and his bandmates decided to name Black Sabbath after the Mario Bava movie playing across the street from their rehearsal space, and Australian filmmaker Sean Byrne (The Loved Ones) revisits it once more for his sophomore horror feature, The Devil’s Candy. This time around, though, Byrne adds a twist by appealing to a growing and under-represented segment of the extreme art forms’ shared fan base: parents.

A long-haired, tattooed Ethan Embry stars as Jesse Hellman, a struggling painter who has passed on his love of all things metal to his preteen daughter, Zooey (Kiara Glasco). Along with his wife, loving and tolerant hair stylist Astrid (Shiri Appleby), Jesse just bought a house in the countryside »

Movie Review – The Devil’s Candy (2015)

The Devil’s Candy, 2015

Directed by Sean Byrne

Starring Ethan Embry, Shiri Appleby, Kiara Glasco, Pruitt Taylor Vince

Synopsis:

A metalhead painter and his young family find themselves stalked by satanic forces after moving into a derelict house in the countryside.

You only have to look as far as last year’s Deathgasm, Brutal Legend or even just anything Motörhead have ever touched to know that heavy metal stereotypes and demonic possession have walked hand in hand in horror fiction for what feels like eternity. Sean Byrne’s latest, the long-awaited follow-up to his 2009 Australian cult hit The Loved Ones (if you know, you know) tries its darnedest to just about un-marry all of these lazy assumptions and obvious links and for the most part, delivers something deeply original and dare I say it, totally far out.

Just as demented, but a whole lot less funny than his debut, Byrne »

[Editor’s Note: Spoilers follow for “Girls” Season 6, Episode 4 and onwards.]

The “Girls” pregnancy story may have been planned from the start, but we got one major hint that someone would end up with child less than halfway through the series, Vulture points out.

In the Season 3 premiere “Females Only,” Hannah (Lena Dunham) and Adam (Adam Driver) ran into his ex Natalia (Shiri Appleby) with her supportive friend Angie (Amy Schumer) at Ray’s new coffee and pizza joint.

Natalia was still very hurt by Adam jilting her, and at first Angie tried to guilt-trip Adam by claiming Natalia was expecting. “She’s pregnant with your child… How does it feel like to abandon your son?” Angie demanded.

Natalia owned up to the bluff and revealed she was not pregnant. Instead, she showed maturity and expressed how hurt she was by his abandonment, which Adam apologized for, »
