A very bad man is after a set of top secret Russian nuclear launch codes, and this is making the secret Imf organization very nervous.

Imf field agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) can't really help all that much with this; he's managed to get himself locked up in a high security Moscow prison. Agents Jane Carter (Paula Patton) and Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg) are assigned the task of getting the man out of the clink so that he can be put to some real use, and this is done in a fairly slick if raucous manner involving computer hacking and staged prison riots.

Now free to do his job, Hunt and his team head out on the trail of a newly arising supervillain going under the codename »

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol

Stars: Tom Cruise, Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner, Paula PattonMichael Nyqvist | Written by Josh Appelbaum, André Nemec | Directed by Brad Bird

Tom Cruise is back for a fourth outing with the Imf. That’s Impossible Mission Force, obviously, not International Monetary Fund, as any sensible person would naturally assume.  The film kicks off with Cruise being busted out of a Russian prison for crimes unknown. He and his team (Pegg, Renner, and Patton) are then sent on the trail of Michael Nyqvist’s nuclear terrorist via the Kremlin, Dubai and Mumbai. En route, the Kremlin gets a bit blown up in what is incorrectly assumed to be an American attack and Team Tom are formally disavowed and must go rogue in order to save the day.

MIssion Impossible: Ghost Protocol is inherently, inexcusably and spectacularly ridiculous. It’s overlong, makes baffling logical leaps and in Tom Cruise, »

Brad Bird's "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol"

17 December 2011 6:14 AM, PST | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

We'll begin with a couple of ringing endorsements and then add a qualifier or two, but all in all, most critics are pleased to be surprised.

"Take an aging star often viewed as a weirdo," begins Salon's Andrew O'Hehir, "a director who's never made a live-action film and the fourth installment of a 15-year-old movie franchise whose roots go back to 1960s television. What do you get? Well, it certainly could have been a total disaster, or an awkward nostalgia exercise, but instead Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol is something even more unlikely: the most exciting action flick of the year, by a huge margin. Director Brad Bird brings all the wit, style and imagination of his animated films (Ratatouille, The Incredibles and The Iron Giant) to this slick secret-agent techno-fantasy. As for 49-year-old Tom Cruise, he's surely ready for a comeback after weathering the worst publicity of his celebrity career. »

[Review] Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol

16 December 2011 5:29 AM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

There’s very little reason to come out of Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol doubting Brad Bird‘s skill as a live-action filmmaker. To date, of course, he’s known best for his Pixar contributions, which include the directorial oversight of The Incredibles and Ratatouille, but with the fourth installment of this Tom Cruise-headlined franchise, Bird proves just as adept at staging large-scale set pieces in physical locations. The difference, though, is that his two previous films both had the foundation of intelligent screenplays, while the written material for Ghost Protocol, co-penned by Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec, is just plain dumb.

“Hang on a second there,” you might say, “this movie isn’t supposed to be a smart actioner.” And I would agree with you (for the most part, because, at 133 minutes, the film outstays its welcome by at least 20, and there are one-too-many let’s-take-an-action-break-and-get-emotional monologues). But what »

'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol' Review (2011)

16 December 2011 3:51 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol is a film with major thrills, a lackluster villain and a far greater attempt at laughs than any of its three predecessors. Director Brad Bird (The Incredibles), making his live-action directorial debut, has charged himself with a serious task as he pushes aside his animation chops, picks up large-format, 70mm IMAX cameras and tackles a globe-trotting plot that wows with spectacle but slightly underachieves on intrigue.

Without initial explanation as to what has occurred since Mission: Impossible III came to a close, Ghost Protocol opens with Impossible Mission Force (Imf) Agent Ethan Hunt (Cruise) holed up in a Moscow prison, but he won't be there long. Sloshing through the sewers below is Agent Jane Carter (Paula Patton) and above ground is Mission: Impossible III tech guru Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg), no longer strapped to a desk at headquarters, but now a field agent.

‘Mission: Incredible—Ghost Protocol’ Mash-Up Trailer

16 December 2011 2:29 AM, PST | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

In a tribute to director Brad Bird’s opening of “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” next week, there is a tribute mash-up with his 2004’s Pixar animation “The Incredibles.” The video was created by The MashupArtist on YouTube. The film stars Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Paula Patton, Ving Rhames and Josh Holloway. Here is a brief synopsis of the film: This is not just another mission. The Imf is shut down when it’s implicated in a global terrorist bombing plot. Ghost Protocol is initiated and Ethan Hunt and his rogue new team must go undercover to clear their organization’s name. No help, no contact, off the grid. You have never seen a mission grittier and more intense than this. The script is written by Josh Appelbaum, Andre Nemec and Christopher McQuarrie. “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” will be in theaters on December 21st later this year. Check out »

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol Review (Four Stars). Tom Cruise Soars Sky High (Literally)

Film Review: ‘Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol’ Rocks Your Holiday

15 December 2011 1:56 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Brad Bird proves that he can make the leap from Pixar to action with one of the best genre films of the year, the adrenalized “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.” Proving there is a way to make a big budget franchise installment that feels vibrant, alive, and like more than just a pathetic retread of what has come before (unlike this year’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Sherlock Holmes” entries), “Ghost Protocol” delivers with breakneck pace and stellar action choreography. This movie wastes little time – it’s a lean, mean, action machine.

Rating: 4.0/5.0

After a brief intro in which an Imf agent (Josh Holloway of “Lost”) is assassinated by a gorgeous killer (Lea Seydoux), Bird’s film starts its international adventure (nothing takes place stateside until the epilogue) in a Russian prison. While Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) lies in his bed, bouncing a rock against the wall, two agents »

Brad Bird interview: Mission: Impossible, The Iron Giant, Die Hard, fast edits and movie music

Brad Bird chats to us about Mission: Impossible, The Incredibles, Die Hard, sound, Inglourious Basterds and much, much more...

Regular readers of this site will be all too aware of our love for the movies of Brad Bird. The Iron Giant is a firm, firm favourite in these parts, and our feelings towards The Incredibles and Ratatouille are no mystery, either.

For his fourth film, Bird has tackled the fourth Mission: Impossible movie. And as part of the promotional tour for that film, they let us in a room with him for 20 minutes. The fools. Here's what happened...

Does it get any less scary, the process of moviemaking, and everything associated with it?

I don’t think so if you’re doing it right. I think if you get too comfortable with it, then something’s missing. I think that you ought to be a little frightened. It’s like »

‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’ Review – Bad Ass Action With Brad Bird Style

13 December 2011 12:00 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Without exaggeration, you can probably count the amount of static dialogue scenes in Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol on one hand. In seemingly each and every scene, director Brad Bird’s first live-action film is bursting with vitality. Things are always moving, situations are stressful, not everyone is who they say they are, and more often than not there’s some kind of awe-inspiring stunt or intense fight happening. From frame one, Ghost Protocol is a high-octane drag race of non-stop action and that in itself would almost be sufficient. Bird, however, separates this film from not only the rest of the series, but most action films in general, by having these scenes advance the plot as well as character, all while maintaining a welcome balance of levity and heart. While Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol rewards viewers who are familiar with the previous three films in the series, it's more or less newbie friendly. »
