Cher: 'Women have always been sex objects and always will be'

7 November 2013 4:06 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

After five decades in show business, Cher is funnier and more outspoken than ever. She talks about Miley Cyrus, America's lurch to the right – and whether Dalí really gave her a vibrator

Cher walks into a London hotel room looking brilliantly Cher-like. She is wearing a leather jacket, tiny skirt, fishnets and big, buckled biker boots. She's got the blow-dried bouffant and pristine makeup of a pop star, but also the subtle swagger of a rock star – just witness the way she instantly dismisses the swarm of managers buzzing around her: "I hate talking with a thousand people around me."

Even more brilliant is how unintimidating Cher is. Up until a year ago that might have been a surprise, but when she joined Twitter in 2012, her public image was transformed. This, for instance, is her current Twitter biography:

‘The Last American Virgin’ Blu-ray Review

21 September 2013 12:44 AM, PDT | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Stars: Lawrence Monoson, Steve Antin, Diane Franklin, Joe Rubbo, Kimmy Robertson, Louisa Moritz | Written and Directed by Boaz Davidson

I’ve long been a fan of The Last American Virgin, no doubt due to my obsessions as a teenager with the ingenue that is Diane Franklin. Having enjoyed Better Off Dead (where she played a French exchange student Monique Junot) and then caught her “stirring” performance in Amityville 2: The Possession I was eager to see more of the sctresses ample charms. And that’s how I discovered Boaz Davidson’s The Last American Virgin

The film follows three friends, Gary (Monoson), Rick (Antin) and David (Rubbo), as they stumble from one sexual escapade to the other, taking in nymphomaniac Latin dance teacher Carmilla (Moritz), a red-headed hooker who gives them crabs and a bevy of teenage girls eager and willing to give it up for a line of coke and a dance. »

Blu-ray Review: 'The Last American Virgin'

18 September 2013 12:44 AM, PDT | CineVue | See recent CineVue news »

★★☆☆☆ Unlike the majority of previous films to have resurfaced via the esteemed Arrow Video label, the years haven't been particularly kind to 1982's The Last American Virgin - a grandiose title which suggests some kind of a smutty coming-of-age epic, but in reality only manages to deliver the grubby goods sporadically. Brought to the screen by infamous eighties producers Yoram Globus and Menahem Golan, the film is almost a virtual shot-for-shot remake of Lemon Popsicle, their bawdy paean to sixties American youth culture which was shot in their home city of Tel Aviv (and effectively launched the duo's careers).

Transplanting the tale of three shamefully horny teens to actual American soil - and set a couple of decades later than the original - Popsicle's director Boaz Davidson was also lured back on-board. With a budget which looks to have been mostly swallowed up by the purchasing of major jukebox hits »

Blu-ray Review - The Last American Virgin (1982)

The Last American Virgin, 1982.

Directed by Boaz Davidson.

Starring Lawrence Monoson, Steve Antin, Diane Franklin, Joe Rubbo, Kimmy Robertson and Louise Moritz.

Synopsis:

Three Californian high school boys find their friendship tested by relationships, sexual desires and growing up...

More intriguing and far stranger than one would expect from first inspection, producer, writer and director Boaz Davidson's The Last American Virgin is something of a amalgam of a sex comedy and a social issue film.

The movie follows Gary (Lawrence Monoson), Rick (Steve Antin) and David (Joe Rubbo), three teenagers struggling to come to terms with growing up, school life, part time work, and more than anything else, the need to get laid. Sharing lewd cues from Porky's (released in the same year) - or, to a more British perspective, something of the sauciness and speeded up action montages of the Carry On films - the film's first half »

"The popcorn you are eating has been pissed in. Film at eleven." – 'The Kentucky Fried Movie' (1977)

Greetings from the apocalypse! If you lost some fingers to frostbite while walking down the driveway to get your mail, don't panic, that's perfectly normal for this time of year … on the east coast, anyway. A few bits of drudgery opening at the multiplex will numb your brain even more than the cold, but lucky for you I've scouted out some alternative routes towards weekend moviegoing satisfaction.

Friday, January 25

There was a minute or two in the late '90s/early '00s when The Farrelly Brothers were the undisputed heavyweight champions of comedy, but after round-one knockouts like "The Heartbreak Kid" and "The Three Stooges" they're officially classified "punch-drunk." Now it seems Peter Farrelly has made a movie so bad even his brother Bobby's not involved, and it's called "Movie 43." Taking »
