Opinionated: The state of Impact Wrestling

A new year marks a new column for Nerdly… Opinionated. Where we give you our thoughts on everything and anything geeky and nerdy. First up is Phil’s thoughts on Impact Wrestling.

It’s been quite some time since I’ve personally written anything about pro-wrestling, between managing the site and writing movie reviews I’ve found little time to discuss wrestling. That’s not to say I haven’t been keeping up with everything on WWE’s programming: Raw, Smackdown and Nxt; as well as, to a lesser extent, UK promotions (via Powerbomb.tv) and… Impact Wrestling.

Yes, Impact Wrestling. A programme that, at one time, back in the pre-Hogan era and later into the Hogan era, I preferred to the output of Vince McMahon and co. Back in those days the matches seemed more exciting, the feuds seemed more impactful (pardon the pun) and the overall product seemed

Wrestling Daily News Roundup – The Undertaker at Smackdown, Rey Mysterio Signing for Impact!?, Samoa Joe Injured

Liam Hoofe with a round-up of the latest wrestling news…

The Undertaker at Smackdown

Click on any wrestling site at the moment and you will see rumours of The Undertaker returning to face John Cena at this year’s Wrestlemania. The Deadman has not been seen on WWE TV since losing to Roman Reigns at last year’s Wrestlemania, in what many fans presumed what his retirement match. Fans have been wanting to see Taker take on Cena for some time now and if reports are to be believed, then they may finally get their wish.

PWInsider is reporting that The Undertaker was backstage at last night’s Smackdown Live event. While there is no word on what he was doing there, speculation is rife that the Deadman could have been there to discuss an angle with Cena for the upcoming 25th-anniversary edition of Monday Night Raw. Of course, Taker

Wrestling Daily News Roundup: New Teams Confirmed for Mixed Match Challenge, Tag Match Added to the Royal Rumble, Big Name Added to Raw’s 25th Anniversary Show

Liam Hoofe with a round-up of the latest wrestling news…

New Teams Confirmed for Mixed Match Challenge

WWE has been unveiling the teams for the mixed-match challenge via a series of amusing vignettes over the last week or so, and on last night’s Raw, the teams of The Miz and Asuka, and Goldust and Alicia Fox were confirmed to be competing in the event. There is some speculation, coming from Bryan Alvarez, that Asuka’s unbeaten streak could be brought to an end on one of the shows, and that this would establish the show as a must-see for fans. If that is the case, then you can expect many fans, myself included, to be angered by that decision. The company has a record of bringing about unceremonious ends to unbeaten streaks in recent years but this would take things to the next level.

Tag Team Match Confirmed for

WWE Raw Review 4/12/17 – Matt Hardy is Awoken, Tag Team Title Match, Shield Split Teased?

Liam Hoofe reviews this week’s edition of Monday Night Raw

No Stephanie or Triple H to start this week’s Raw, instead Raw general manager Kurt Angle is out to a nice pop to start the show. Angle is out to announce some of the night’s matches, and just as he is about to reveal Roman Reigns’ opponent for the night, Jason Jordan makes his way out to the ring. Jordan is doing his usual ‘just give me a chance, dad’ shtick, and Roman then makes his way to the ring to a mixed reception. Roman tells Jordan that if he wants his chance, he needs to step up and take it, and stop whining to his dad. Samoa Joe’s music hits to a big pop. It’s kind of amusing that Joe, the biggest heel in this segment, got the biggest pop after Angle.

Wrestling Daily News Roundup: Major Change to Money in the Bank, PPVs Axed, Kurt Angle Vs John Cena?, Becky Lynch Update

Liam Hoofe with a round-up of the latest wrestling news…

Changes Made to Money in the Bank, Full 2018 PPV Schedule

For some time now, WWE fans have considered Money in the Bank as one of the year’s big shows. The PPV calendar traditionally highlights Royal Rumble, Wrestlemania, Summerslam, and Survivor Series as the company’s biggest four shows of the year, and they are the only four shows to feature both Raw and Smackdown brands competing. Well, according to PWInsider, it was revealed yesterday that Money in the Bank 2018 will also be a dual branded event, indicated that the WWE are beginning to treat it as one of their big shows.

The news was revealed alongside the full 2018 WWE PPV schedule, which features several other interesting changes. The first thing you may notice is that the company has trimmed their schedule from 16 shows to 14, which are made up of 5 dual branded,

Wrestling Daily News Roundup: Triple H’s Wrestlemania Opponent, Huge Return on Raw, Royal Rumble Main Event Plans, Landmark for Roman Reigns

Liam Hoofe with a round-up of the latest wrestling news…

Triple H’s Wrestlemania Opponent

The ending of Survivor Series was an absolute mess, I think most wrestling fans would agree on that. While it could be argued that the match was booked as to get Braun Strowman over, most of us can agree that once again, Triple H stole the limelight.

Wrestlemania feuds are often started at Survivor Series, though, and with Triple H screwing pretty much everybody in this bout, and then having a confrontation with Braun Strowman- fans were left a little bit confused as to who his Mania opponent would be. Rumoured opponents for Hunter have been Shane or Kurt Angle in recent months, and with him attacking both of these men at Survivor Series, things still remain unclear.

The rumours circulating today are that Triple H will face both Braun Strowman and Kurt Angle (sorry,

WWE Raw Review 20/11/17 – New Intercontinental Champion, A Surprise Return, Two Shocking Debuts

Liam Hoofe Reviews last night’s WWE Raw

Welcome to Monday Night Raw, or has it appears to be becoming once again, The Stephanie McMahon Show. This week’s episode began, like many before it, with Stephanie McMahon coming out to the ring to address the fall out of Survivor Series. She officially branded Raw as the A-Show before confirming that Kurt Angle is 1000% (not possible, Steph) staying on in his role as Raw Gm. She was then joined by her husband Triple H, who was quickly followed by Kurt Angle.

Angle instantly got in Hunter’s face before Jason Jordan’s music hit to zero response and the former American Alpha member hit the ring to challenge Triple H to a match. Triple H took off his blazer and claimed that he was scared of no-one before Braun’s music hit and out comes the monster among men. Braun

WWE Survivor Series 2017 Review

Liam Hoofe reviews WWE Survivor Series 2017…

The WWE has really put a lot of effort into this year’s Survivor Series and after weeks of excellent build, the show took place this past Sunday night. While the battle between Raw and SmackDown is nothing new, this year’s event threw up some exceptional matches and turned the event into a mini WrestleMania, especially when you look at some of the talent appearing on the card.

Would the card deliver on the night though? Let’s take a look back at each of Survivor Series 2017 matches and find out.

The Shield Defeated The New Day

What a way to start the evening. The Shield Vs The New Day was one of the night’s dream matches and boy, did it deliver. The six men had an excellent chemistry in the ring and there was some really well put together spots. It

WWE Survivor Series 2017 Predictions

Liam Hoofe with his predictions for this Sunday’s WWE Survivor Series 2017…

WWE Survivor Series is supposed to be one of the biggest WWE events of the year and after pulling out all the stops to make last year’s event one of the biggest in recent memory, they have gone one better this year, giving us a super-stacked card that should, by rights, be the best PPV of 2017.

That might seem like a big statement to make but seriously, take a look at that card! John Cena, Brock Lesnar, Triple H, Aj Styles, Kurt Angle, The Shield and plenty of their newer stars all performing on one show is not something we get often outside of WrestleMania and judging from the matches they are in, I really can’t see anything disappointing on the night.

Once again, Raw and SmackDown will battle for brand supremacy, and the event has received a solid build,

Comic Book Review- WWE Survivor Series Special #1

Liam Hoofe reviews Boom! Comics WWE Survivor Series Special…

Back in August, when I reviewed Boom! Studios’ WWE SummerSlam Special, I finished the review by stating that I hoped the company would continue to provide these little nostalgia filled editions for each of the big events. The ‘big four’ wrestling events – Royal Rumble, WrestleMania, SummerSlam, and Survivor Series – all have a rich history, one that is ripe to be explored in the pages of a comic book. Survivor Series, the final big four events of the year, is perhaps the most interesting to explore. The event has become synonymous with surprises, debuts, big returns and of course, screw jobs.

Boom! Studios has lovingly crafted six such stories for their first Survivor Series special, exploring big events from the company’s past. Have they done these tales justice though? Let’s take a look…

The Montreal Screwjob

There was one story

WWE TLC 2017 Review

Liam Hoofe reviews WWE TLC 2017…

WWE TLC was given the quite the make-over over the weekend. The initial plans to have The Shield return in the main event were changed due to an outbreak of illness in the WWE and suddenly, fan excitement was through to the roof for this show. Not only did we now have the return of Kurt Angle to look forward to, but we also had the debut of Asuka and a dream-match between Aj Styles and Finn Balor!. So, did it deliver? Let’s go through each match, and find out.

Asuka Defeated Emma

It was a nice idea to open the show with the debut of Asuka and the Empress of Tomorrow delivered strongly on her WWE debut. The best decision here was to not play the match as a simple squash. Emma getting some solid offence in made for a much more entertaining
