Danielle Darrieux, La Ronde Screen legend Danielle Darrieux turned 95 yesterday, May 1. The Bordeaux-born (1917) Darrieux probably has had the longest "film-star" career ever: eight decades, from Wilhelm Thiele’s Le Bal (1931) to Denys Granier-Deferre’s Pièce montée / The Wedding Cake (2010). Absurdly, despite a prestigious career consisting of more than 100 films, Darrieux has never won an Honorary Oscar — but then again, very few women have. However, she did receive an Honorary César back in 1985. Additionally, Darrieux, along with her fellow 8 femmes / 8 Women co-stars, shared Best Actress honors at the European Film Awards and the Berlin Film Festival. Live, announced the Closing Night film and official Us and international selections for the 2012 Festival. Guest Director, Artists in Residence and Conversations with special guests will be announced later this month. The 2012 Los Angeles Film Festival will screen a diverse slate of nearly 200 feature films, short films, and music videos, representing more than 30 countries, along with signature programs such as the Filmmaker Retreat, Poolside Chats, Coffee Talks, music events and more. "As the annual Rendez-Vous With French Cinema series begins in New York City [today] with a screening of the blockbuster Intouchables, France's film industry is jubilant," begins Stephen Holden in the New York Times, and of course, what he's referring to first is the nearly absolute domination of The Artist throughout the just-passed awards season. Secondly, he's referring to the opening night film, "an interracial buddy comedy that has grossed nearly $240 million. French director and screenwriter André Téchiné has had a long and illustrious career, earning critical acclaim for a great variety of films. His works date as far back as 1969, the year he released his debut, Aline s’en va. Among the common threads which tie in his works are the complicated interactions and strained relationships between his characters, who are continuously confronted with emotional challenges they would much rather not deal with. The wealth they sometimes possess is belittled in the face of various interpersonal hardships. The 17th edition of Rendez-Vous with French Cinema, presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center and Unifrance Films, will open on March 1 with Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano's The Intouchables (Intouchables), "an unprecedented box-office phenomenon in France, where it shattered records to become the second most successful French film of all time." Back in November, John Lichfield and Agnès Poirier floated theories as to why in the Independent and Guardian, respectively. The festival closes on March 11 with David and Stéphane Foenkinos's Delicacy, featuring Audrey Tautou, and in between, there'll be over two dozen New York premieres, new work by André Téchiné, Benoît Jacquot and Alain Cavalier, and the Centerpiece: Pathé's newly restored version of Marcel Carné's Children of Paradise (1945).
