Kevin Smith Announces His Plans to do Clerks III on Broadway

4 April 2012 9:00 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

By far one of my all-time favourite writer-directors, Kevin Smith announced last year that he intends to have Hit Somebody be the final film he directs.

Like all other Smith fans out there, the thought of a finite number of Smith projects left was devastating, but he’s thankfully since gone on to say that he’ll be working in different media and in other ways.

EW recently spoke to Smith at a book signing in New York – for his latest book, Tough Sh*t: Life Advice from a Fat, Lazy Slob Who Did Good (available in the UK now: here or here, for example) – and he talked about his plans on revisiting the world of his first and seventh films in an entirely different format:

Kevin Smith planning 'Clerks 3' Broadway show

4 April 2012 6:45 AM, PDT | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Kevin Smith is planning to develop Clerks III as a Broadway show. The Red State filmmaker told Entertainment Weekly that he has held preliminary discussions with cast members from the movies about reprising their roles for a stage sequel. He said: "Jeff [Anderson] was the first person I reached out to. I sent him an email after I'd seen Alan Rickman in Seminar in February, 'You're the first person I'm gonna tell... Clerks III is gonna be a play on Broadway'. "'We'll do a six-month run and sell out the entirety in advance. You up for six shows a week, sir? Live?' To (more) »

Kevin Smith Planning Clerks III On Stage

3 April 2012 1:05 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Kevin Smith has been talking for a while about retiring from filmmaking after hockey drama Hit Somebody to focus on helping other people get their movies out there, and on his flourishing multimedia Smod-monikered empire. But where does that leave the once-mooted dream of Clerks III? According to Smith, the future for Dante, Randal, Jay and Silent Bob might just be on the stage. No, we’re not talking a massive musical in which the characters sing show-stopping tunes about Star Wars. Smith brought the idea of a Broadway stage production of any third Clerks story up at a book signing last week, and Entertainment Weekly got him talking about his plans. As of right now, it’s still in the early duiscussion period, but Smith has reached out to the cast to get their opinions. “Jeff (Anderson, who plays Randal) was the first person I reached out to. 'Clerks III': Kevin Smith on bringing his Jersey boys to Broadway -- Exclusive

3 April 2012 6:00 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

When Kevin Smith announced last year that his upcoming hockey movie Hit Somebody would be his final film as a director, you could almost hear a collective sigh of disappointment from hard-core fans of Dante and Randal, Jay and Silent Bob. Smith’s convenience-store drones and derelicts introduced Smith’s Jersey brand of profane wit in 1994′s Clerks, and a successful 2006 sequel proved that audiences hadn’t had enough. Smith’s retirement threatened to kill any chances of completing the Quik Stop trilogy — a challenge you’d think might tempt the Star Wars-obsessed Smith. Well, there is a new hope. »

Kevin Smith Interested in Clerks III on Broadway

29 March 2012 11:30 AM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

A week ago, Kevin Smith announced plans to bring back the short-lived Clerks: The Animated Series. At the time, most assumed it was Smith's way of keeping the characters alive without having to make a Clerks III, as Smith has announced his retirement from directing after he finishes the two-part Hit Somebody films. Smith said previously, "There’s possibly a Clerks 3. If I have something to say in my late 40s about being in my late 40s, I’ll think of [Clerks'] Dante and Randal." However, it seems Smith has a surprising develoment for Dante and Randal up his sleeve - taking them from the Video Stop of New Jersey to the Great White Way itself!

Smith says he doesn't want to make the play a musical, but rather write it as a 90-minute one-act play that would run for only 6 months. The only person that Smith has to convince »

Smith Wants To Take Clerks To Broadway

29 March 2012 9:11 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Filmmaker Kevin Smith is planning to revive Clerks - on Broadway.

The director wants to make a third installment to follow up his cult movies Clerk and Clerks II, but only if he can launch it on the New York stage.

Smith hopes to open the play at the end of 2014 to mark the 20th anniversary of his directorial debut Clerks, about two convenience store workers.

Chatting about his plans at a book signing on Tuesday, he explained, "I do want to do it as a play... That would make me excited - to do a f**kin' live show."

But Smith will only go ahead with his plans if Clerks star Jeff Anderson will commit to performing in a live show.

He adds, "The one person who will be the hurdle on this... the person I'm going to have to convince, that's Jeff Anderson... If I can't convince him, there's no point in doing it; he is the key to Clerks for me. If he says yeah, then that's what we'll do - we'll do it as a Broadway play, which I think will be so fun for all of us." »

Filmmaker Kevin Smith's is apparently planning to direct another sequel to his films "Clerks" and "Clerks II," but for the New York stage instead of the big screen, /Film reported on March 29."I do want to do it as a play," Smith said at a book signing in L.A. on March 27. "That would make me excited, to do a f**kin' live show."Smith hopes to open the play at the end of 2014 to mark the 20th anniversary of "Clerks," his directorial debut about two convenience store workers. The director said he was inspired after seeing "Seminar" on Broadway, starring Alan Rickman. But don't expect open call auditions for the lead roles any time soon, because he added that the play will happen only if original "Clerks" star Jeff Anderson commits to the project."If I can't convince him, there's no point in doing it," Smith said. Kevin Smith to resurrect Clerks: The Animated Series?

25 March 2012 5:58 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Filmmaker Kevin Smith may be calling time on his directing career after his next outing, the two-part hockey drama Hit Somebody, but that doesn't mean we've heard the last from the various characters of the View Askewniverse, with Smith taking to Twitter to tease the return of Dante Hicks and Randall Graves for new episodes of the short-lived Clerks: The Animated Series...

Via @Just_Reboot "Clerks cartoon was brilliant, I rewatch it bi-monthly" @Miramax 2.0 and I are hoping to give you new eps weekly next year.

— KevinSmith (@ThatKevinSmith) March 22, 2012

Clerks: The Animated Series is of course the cartoon spin-off to Smith's 1994 feature debut, which was developed by Smith, his producing partner Scott Mosier and former Seinfeld and Saturday Night Live writer David Mandel. The show saw Brian O'Halloran and Jeff Anderson reunite to voice their respective characters and also saw the return of Jason Mewes and Smith as Jay and Silent Bob, »

Clerks: The Animated Series To Return?

23 March 2012 6:00 PM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Clerks is, without a doubt, the first film most people think of when they think of writer-director Kevin Smith. It proved so popular that it even paved the way for an animated prime-time series on ABC. The original cast (Brian O'Halloran, Jeff Anderson, Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith) all reprised their roles in voice-over form and were joined by Alec Baldwin, who played a hysterical, maniacal Vincent Price-lookalike businessman named Leonardo Leonardo. The clerks would often be caught up in his quest for domination until he was thwarted by them. Even though the show was heavily toned down both in language and adult situations from its live-action R-rated counterpart (for example, turning Jay and Silent Bob from drug dealers to fireworks salesmen), its comedy was a bit broader. The show didn't last very long, with only two episodes airing on television. It was soon released to DVD, where it gained a cult audience. »
