Contrary to the movie versions, Andersen's stories usually came to sad or unfortunate conclusions. "The Little Mermaid" committed suicide; "The Little Match Girl" froze to death; "The Steafast Tin Soldier" melted; and although the heroine triumphed, "The Snow Queen" survives too!
