Sergio Amidei was born on October 30, 1904 in Trieste, Austria-Hungary. He was a writer and producer, known for General Della Rovere (1959), Un borghese piccolo piccolo (1977) and Rome, Open City (1945). He died on April 14, 1981 in Rome, Lazio, Italy.

Member of jury at the Cannes Film Festival in 1979.
Considered to be one of the foremost exponents of Italian post-war neo-realism.
Founded his own production company, Colonna Films, in 1949.
