Born in Melbourne, Australia, Joss Ambler was a character actor who
played usually small parts in British B - and occasionally A movies
('The Citadel', 'The Half Way House', 'The Captain's Paradise'...).
Serious-looking, mustached and bespectacled he more often than once
found himself in the shoes of no-nonsense characters such as police
inspectors, officers or chiefs, doctors, managers, judges, auctioneers
and teachers. His civil-servant looks did not stop him from marrying
American actress June Lang. After divorcing her he married Irene, who
had been a WAAF in World War Two. The couple lived happily in London
but had no children. Joss Ambler died too early, in 1959.
Although often mistakenly listed as being married to American actress June Lang, he and his fellow Australian wife Joan were successful players in Scottish theatre before he entered films.
